IB Chemistry Year 1

Program Overview: The goal of IB Chemistry 11 is to assist the student in reaching the Curriculum Outcomes for IB Chemistry as set out by IBO.

Students will study topics that include, but are not limited to, periodicity, atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, energetics, kinetics, measurement and data processing, and organic chemistry.

Expectations of Students for Learning: In addition to the Curriculum Outcomes, this chemistry course will emphasize problem solving. Students will be expected to incorporate skills and information learned from other disciplines such as mathematics and English to show that problem solving in chemistry does not isolate itself from other areas.

Students are expected to be able to work in group situations or individually in the lab. Additionally, students are expected to acquire, synthesize, and interpret results in lab or mathematical situations.

Students will be assigned homework on a regular basis. Successful completion of the assigned homework will assist the students in building the competence required to meet the curriculum outcomes of the course. Practice problems will be assigned from both the text and worksheets.

Students are expected to be prepared and on time for class each day. Due dates for projects and labs will be clearly stated to the students and are expected to be followed.

Variety of Student Assessments: Assessment will include lab activities and write-ups, tests, homework, quizzes, and an exam.

Evaluation Procedure: The student’s final mark in the course will be calculated based on the following percentages: Tests, Labs, and quizzes (70%), and Final Exam (30%). Students with a valid written excuse for missing a test or other assessment, excused within 3 school days, will be given the opportunity to write a make-up assessment within 8 school days. It is the responsibility of a student who misses a test to arrange a time with the teacher when the make-up test will be written. Make-up tests are generally written before or after school. Students who do not write a regularly scheduled test and do not write the make-up test will receive a mark of zero for the test. Students are also responsible to make up all other missed assessments including homework checks, quizzes and labs.

Formal and Informal Communication: Progress reports will be sent home to parents during the fifth week (October 13) and the tenth week (November 15/16) followed by Parent-Teacher visitation (November18/19). Test marks will give parents an excellent idea of how their child is doing in the course and, as such, parents are expected to keep themselves aware of their child’s continual achievement. As well, if required, communication may come in the form of a phone call home, e-mail, or a message in the student agenda.

Ways Parents Can Communicate: Parent-teacher interviews, note to teacher via student, e-mail as stated on the CEC website, or call the office (896-5700) to make an appointment or to request a telephone call home.
