There are 2 area codes used in Istanbul. Area code for the Asian side is (0216) and (0212) for the European side. In case you need to call the campus from the airport, you need to dial the area code (0216). You won’t need the area code when calling a cell phone. When calling internally on campus, only dial the extension.
Currency:
At present one U.S. Dollar equals about 1.400.000 Turkish Lira. However, the rates change rapidly, therefore for exact exchange rates you should check with the local daily papers which will be available on campus upon your request. Currency can be procured through local exchange offices in the city at virtually the same rate as at banks. Banks are open Monday through Friday between 09:00 hours to 17:00 hours (all close for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30). There is a branch of Akbank on campus, located in the University Center. You may also find exchange offices at the airport; however, due to airport taxes and higher commission rates, the purchase value would approximately be 10-12% less, in comparison to regular exchange offices or banks in the city.
Credit Cards:
Major credit cards such as Master Card, Visa and American Express are accepted at major hotels and restaurants, however you are advised to confirm before making any arrangements. Personal checks are not commonly used.
Taxi:
The most convenient public transportation means would be taxis in the city. They have meters, which start with an initial charge of 1.050.000 Turkish Lira, and charge about TL 790.000 TL for every kilometer; passengers pay the total rate on the meter. Taxi drivers usually don’t speak English unless they are operated by major hotels. Even then it is best to have your destination written down or directed by a native speaker. It is customary to round up the fare to the nearest TL 100,000 to include a tip. Taxi would approximately cost 20.000.000 TL from campus to any point on the Asian side and 25.000.000 TL to the European side.

Tips at restaurants are around 10% of the service total service charge.
