HOPE for YOUTH

A speaking program for teenagers that brings awareness to how rampant depression is among youth, that no one is alone, there is hope, and EACH ONE OF US CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

In early 2013, Reason 4 Hope received a grant from LaGrange County REMC to put together a multi-media presentation that could be taken into the schools that would reach out to all teens who might be feeling hopeless. In 2015, we received a grant from Parkview LaGrange Hospital to expand the program, as well as provide a resource packet for the youth and the schools. The presentation fits into a class period, with time for questions and discussion. Many teachers have used it as launch points for an upcoming unit or project. If possible, I like to have the students go to two websites that provide vital information and resources targeting young adults. In 2016, I received a grant from Council for Drug Free LaGrange Countyto collect data to study the correlation between depression and substance abuse; I have a 10 question online survey students take anonymously.

**HOPE for YOUTH program was awarded program of the year from the Council for Drug Free LaGrange County

“Jamelle’s stories and experiences about suicide and depression grabbed the students attention immediately. Her facts and information on the subject were accurate and valuable to the students.” –Carrie Martin, Westview Jr. High Health Teacher

The programs meets the following Indiana Standards for Health Classes:

  • High School: HW 1.1, 1.2, 1.5, 2.4, 3.3, 4.1, 4.4, 8.2-8.4

AH 1.2, 2.4, 4.1, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1, 5.4, 8.2, 8.3

The presentation can be done in a small group setting, a classroom or even an auditorium. The ability to project a power point, and show a built in music video, is best (but not necessary.) There is an online survey for students to take at the end of the presentation. Those results will then be given to each school. We bring resources from Remedy Live and TWLOHA (To Write Love On Her Arms), both of which are organizations focusing on mental/emotional health issues with young adults.
