2002 Skills Competition Scopes

Small Engine Repair

The small power competition for 2002 will be a fully integrated contest

is open to any one that does not have journeyman status,or hold a valid certificate from OPE/ESA or other accredited organization.This will include certificates from small engine manufacturers.Please note that the National competition is for secondary students only.

A written test of approximately 100 questions will cover :general theory of 2 and 4 cycle engines; ignition systems electrical systems (starting and charging); workplace and personal safety; troubleshooting and maintenance; measurements tolerances and torque values and fuel systems. Most will be multiple choice but there may be some essay type questions.

For practical we will be working on Kohler Command engines for 4 cycle and for 2 Cycle, Stihl BG85 handheld blowers.

All contestants will be required to disassemble, diagnose, measure. and correctly reassemble a small engine. All manufacturer specifications, torques and tolerances must be adhered to.

All competitors will bring their own hand tools; a list will be provided to those who register. Any specialty tools will be provided.

As always proper clothing and foot wear must be worn NO EXCEPTIONS.

All safety rules must be adhered to.

1-27mm socket(1-1/16)

1-pliers-regular 1- pliers-needle nose

1- phillips screwdriver 1- standard screwdriver

2- .020" flat feeler gauges 1- ring compressor

1- valvespring compressor 1- flywheel holding tool

1- flywheel puller 1- hammer(deadblow type)

1- 3/8 ratchet and extensions 1- 3/8 to1/2 adapter

1- 3/8 swivel joint 1- torque wrench-inch pound type

1- torque wrench - foot pound type 1- flat prybar

1-#27 torx wrench 1- small regular slotted screwdriver

PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST:

Students will demonstrate skill in the use of hand and measuring tools pursuant to

the repair of small engines. They will exhibit both written and "hands on"

knowledge of basic mechanical principles related to 4 stroke small engines.
