History

Pan Africa Christian University (PAC) was founded by its prime sponsor, the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC), and began its operations in 1978 as a Bible College. As a mission-minded organization, the PAOC began sending missionaries to numerous African countries in the 1920's. As a result of their efforts, a strong National church has emerged in Kenya and surrounding countries. Continentally, these churches are generally known as the Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG). Through the efforts of indigenous pastors, missionaries, and evangelists, some PAG fellowships have grown to over 3,000 churches.

PAC University was born out of a vision to serve these and other evangelical fellowships and institutions by preparing men and women to minister to their particular needs. From its inception, the Council of Governors of PAC University has sought to fulfil its vision of training church workers from a broad range of African countries for a variety of ministry roles within the church of Christ. The predominant vocational needs of the churches are for pastors, evangelists, theology teachers, Sunday school teachers, indigenous missionaries, Bible translators and counsellors. Several Christian denominations and organisations have indicated their needs to PAC University by sending their prospective leaders for training.

Nairobi, Kenya, with its central location and accessibility, was a choice place for the institution to be situated. An exemplary venue became available in 1978 to the PAOC who secured the property for the establishment of a degree-granting institution.

The institution opened for classes on May 2, 1978, with 6 students and has grown to over 250 students. Leadership and faculty were largely provided by theological educators seconded from Canada by the PAOC. Throughout the history of PAC University, the PAOC has continued to second personnel, especially as administrators, while the full-time faculty has been increasingly composed of African nationals. In addition to its full-time lecturing faculty, the University has a number of part-time faculty who lecture in their fields of expertise. Full-time faculty usually have both pastoral experience and post-graduate degrees.

The vision of the Council of Governors was to provide theological education for church leaders at a post-secondary level, not only to offer degrees, but to fully equip Christian workers for their different tasks. After negotiations with the International Correspondence Institute (now Global/ICI University), PAC signed an Educational Agreement permitting the Institution to jointly offer the BA in Bible and Theology degree. PAC was therefore able to offer degrees through ICI University and its accrediting agency [the U.S. Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, in Washington, DC].

In 1985, the Commission For Higher Education (CHE) was established to advance university education in Kenya, with particular reference to the co-ordination of long-term planning, staff development, scholarship and the physical development of universities in Kenya. As the accreditation body in Kenya, the CHE is empowered by law to ensure that the standards of courses of study and examinations, comparable to those being obtained in the public universities in Kenya, are maintained. Because PAC was giving BA degrees before 1985, it came under the auspices of the CHE and was considered a private university. On this basis, the CHE registered PAC as an existing university in 1989. Since that time PAC has been working with the CHE towards government accreditation with the Ministry of Education. The PAC curriculum for the degrees offered was officially approved by the CHE and, as of 2006, Pan Africa Christian is offically a fully accredited private university.

In addition to the main BA in Bible and Theology programme, PAC University offers a course in Bible and Translation Studies together with SIL International, an organisation active around the world in scripture translation [Wycliffe Bible Translators]. This course began in 1989 and is taught by linguistics experts who are specifically training future Bible translators and project consultants. Each year, several students are enrolled in this programme and some of them are presently working on a translation of either the New Testament or the Old Testament into their respective mother tongue. PAC University and ICI University jointly awarded the first BA in Bible and Translation Studies in 1993.

In September 2003, PAC introduced courses that lead to a BA degree in Counselling. This is a valuable programme for anyone looking to help others find inner healing in their lives through counselling ministries. The programme integrates Biblical and theological perspectives with psychological theories of counselling practice.

Most PAC University graduates are involved in Bible College teaching, pastoral ministry, denominational leadership, missionary work, and para-church ministry. Each year a number of PAC University alumni pursue post-graduate studies in universities and seminaries all over the world.

Accreditation

The Commission For Higher Education (CHE) in Kenya is the body charged with overseeing private universities. The CHE has recognised PAC's degrees since 1989. PAC was working with the CHE towards autonomous private university accreditation for many years and was finally awarded the University Charter on February 15, 2008, presented by His Excellency, Hon. Mwai Kibaki. At the current time, the curricula for the BA in Bible and Theology, BA in Counselling and Bachelor of Business Leadership programmes have been approved by the Commission.

PAC University continues to maintain a Cooperative Education Agreement with Global/ICI University of Springfield, Missouri (USA) that is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) accrediting commission. The DETC is listed by the United States Office of Education as a nationally recognised accrediting agency.
