FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome new Staff member

Minden’s Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy – Joan Manz- is extending her leave until the end of the term. Mr Ashley Wilson will be replacing Mrs Manz.

Lockyer District Cross Country

Due to the significant rainfall received at the end of last week, the Lockyer District Cross Country has been rescheduled for Friday 15 May at Blenheim State School. We have received little information about this event and will inform parents of requirements as information is received. Please ensure you have made travel arrangements to and from the event.

NAPLAN is coming

Years 3 and 5 have been busily preparing for NAPLAN which takes place next week (12, 13 and 14 May) Parents can support their children in the lead up to NAPLAN by doing the following:

Ensure they get a good night’s sleep

Ensure they eat healthy “brain” food each day especially for breakfast on the test days

Limit appointments and other commitments to other days

Encourage your child to do their best and not worry excessively about the tests

This year we are running a breakfast program on the 3 mornings of NAPLAN for the year 3 and 5 students. On Thursday 14 May, breakfast will be available for ALL students. Breakfast will comprise fruit, toast with various spreads and milo. Ham and cheese croissants with fruit juice will be added to the menu on Thursday morning. Breakfast will be free on all 3 mornings.

Under Eights Day will be held on Wednesday 20 May from 9:30am-12:30pm. This year’s theme is “Voices of Children – Look, Listen, Hear, Respond”. We have a number of neighbouring schools joining us this year to make the event even more enjoyable. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to attend.

Maintenance

The timber staircase on the western side of A Block has been completely replaced and painted increasing safety for all who use this access and exit point.

Student Safety

A gentle reminder to parents and students that the safest area to drop off and pick up children is the large car-park on the southern side of the school. Some of the school’s closest neighbours have reported near-misses when the gate area near the Sports centre is used to collect children of an afternoon.

Illness

We have had a significant number of children fall ill over the last few weeks with headaches, stomach cramps, vomiting and bad colds. We appreciate parents support in keeping sick children at home during these times to reduce the spread of these illnesses.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Interviews will take place in week 7 (Tuesday 2 June, Thursday 4 June) in an afternoon / night format. Appointments outside of these days will be limited and need to be negotiated with the relevant teacher. All interviews will take place in the Resource Centre and be of 15 minutes duration. Our next newsletter will contain more information about times and the on-line booking process.

School Chaplain

For some students, school is a difficult place to fit in. For others it is a place where they enjoy coming along and learning. Each of us is unique. If your child needs some extra social or emotional support at school, please speak to your child's teacher or contact me directly. It is important that every young person is comfortable, and supported while at school. I am at Fernvale this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please call the school office on 5425 7222 or alternatively you can send an email to me at .

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)

Welcome back to another fun filled term. Vacation care was a blast with so many exciting activities. We had a visit from Ipswich Police. They did a safety talk and answered lots of interesting questions like “How many times can a policeman taza you” It was a great start to the day. We also went to the movies to see “Home”. We also had a carnival day. There were heaps of games, jumping castle, and slushies. We really enjoyed all of this and the children won lots of prizes. The children had lots of fun and so did the staff.

We are now in the process of planning for our next vacation care which is not far away. We would really appreciate some input into our program. If you have any ideas please don’t hesitate to call me.

We are starting to really organise our room and settle into the school and the routine. We would love to offer some different programs in the afternoon but again need your support. We need parents or relatives, friends etc. that would be able to offer some of their knowledge to the PCYC children. Some of the programs could be cooking (especially from another culture) knitting, wood work, sports, and so much more. Please come in and speak to the staff we would really appreciate it.

We will be starting on our sustainability plan which will include starting on our garden and starting an inside garden.

This week we are implementing our child carers program. This will allow parents to get current information on what your child is doing at PCYC. This will also have photos and video of your children doing activities. You will be able to see account details and also newsletters, information on the centre and message the staff. We will be giving parents information and passwords in the coming week.

We have put out a survey this week to make sure we are implementing programs that you feel are valuable to your child and also creating an atmosphere that your child and you are happy with. We want to create a service that is family orientated, friendly and inclusive to everyone’s needs.

Thank you for your time.
