HMO/POS Instructions for UMBC Student-Athletes

Student-athletes have access to on-campus health care provided by our team physicians without the use of the student-athlete’s health insurance. However, all medical services provided at University Health Services (UHS) or at any providers off-campus will require the use of the student-athletes’ health insurance. This information is provided to help you maximize the use of your benefits and thereby minimize out of pocket costs.

UHS is a participating provider with several health insurance companies in addition to the list below. Contact the UHS Insurance Specialist at 410-455-1556 to determine whether or not UHS participates with your plan if it is not listed below To designate the medical director and physician at UHS as your “AWAY FROM HOME CARE or guesting” PCP you may need to provide your insurance company with the information provided below:

Please check with your insurance carrier to determine if you have Out-of-Network benefits for use at UHS. Utilizing an Out-of Network provider generally means your benefit level is lower, resulting in greater out-of-pocket expenses. If you have no coverage for care providedat UHS, the following options are available:

  1. Continue to use on-campus services at UHS assuming that Reasonable & Customary charges for medical services will be applied to the student’s Bursar Account.
  2. Utilize Patient First Centers for medical services. Open 7days/wk,8am-10pm.

  2. Conduct a search for providers on your insurance carriers’ website, typically found on the back of your insurance card, using the school’s zip code 21250 or local zip codes of 21228 and 21229, to find participating providers in the area.
