Education becomes available to women after the American Revolution. Schools open in the 1800’s founders:

Education served as a functional instrument; it upheld the Status Quo and it served as an agency of moral instruction.

However, education enabled women to come together and to express their ideas.

How so?

  • Formed study groups
  • Go out into the community
  • Become visible
  • Volunteer

The end result was that women were familiarizing themselves with representative government.

  1. Write constitutions
  2. Amend proclamations
  3. Vote
  4. Gather new membership

Religion changes after the American Revolution. The Great Awakening occurs.

Why?

  1. Churches were losing membership
  2. People are trying to hold on to values
  3. Industrial capitalism is gaining strength
  4. The Artisan way is slowly disappearing

Society is changing and women are asking questions about their purpose in the “New Republic”.

This organization is very political. Both men and women join.

  • They circulate petitions
  • They organize conventions

Black women join this movement and they will use the platform to speak in public.
