Report on “Rebuilding Houses, Rebuilding Lives”
On Friday and Saturday, September 13-14 the Association sponsored a community event called “Rebuilding Houses, Rebuilding Lives” in Eagle Pass. The purpose was to help families who are still recovering from the recent flood in July. Baptist disaster relief teams came to Eagle Pass from all over Texas to do clean up work on houses. A total of 317 families were helped by Baptist disaster relief teams. The purpose of the event was to follow-up with the 317 families in order to minister to them spiritually and physically.
On Friday night a Christian movie, “The Ride” was shown at the Rick Carr Community Center in the Colonia of Chula Vista. About 75 persons attended the movie. The “Celebration Station” was set up and used. The movie had such a positive impact that Iglesia Bautista Jerusalén in Eagle Pass is planning to begin a movie ministry to reach people with the gospel in different Colonias.
On Saturday morning, church members begin to arrive at the free parking lot less than a block from the international bridge to Mexico. At 9:30 A.M. persons begin to gather to make a big circle around the parking lot to pray. Approximately 300 persons held hands and made a prayer chain. Sixty persons prayed that morning for the spiritual well-being of both cities, for spiritual awakening, for families who experienced loss because of the flood, for safety on the border, and for the churches. After the prayer chain, The Third Floor, the youth praise group from FBC, Uvalde held a concert, and Ruben Chairez, pastor of PIB, Del Rio presented an evangelistic message. After the message, children who were invited with their parents to the block party received backpacks full of school supplies. 350 backpacks were passed out that morning. Later that day the other 200 backpacks were given to children from the poorest Colonias in Eagle Pass by members of PIB, Jerusalén, and Ven A El churches. In addition 750 New Testament and gospel tracts were passed out to individuals. PIB, Eagle Pass praise band presented praise music while hot dogs and hamburgers were enjoyed by all those who attended. The “Celebration Station” turned out to be a big hit.
Two trailer loads each from Barksdale Baptist Church and from Frio Canyon Baptist in Leakey filled with house-hold items were donated to the Baptist congregations in Eagle Pass to help families who lost everything during the flood. Tables, chairs, TV sets, sofas, clothes, etc. were taken to the churches. Both Barksdale and FBC Campwood each will be bringing another trailer load of house-hold items the week of the September 23. FBC, Campwood is giving a sizeable cash donation for the purchase of construction materials to rebuild houses.
On behalf of the Association, we want to thank all the churches and individuals who donated school supplies and house-hold items. You responded like never before to the physical and spiritual needs of families. Thank you again! A special thanks to Charlie Baird for coordinating the donated items drive from the “Canyon” churches. For weeks he worked hard to organize, collect, and take the items to Eagle Pass. We also want to thank the Association Missions and Evangelism Committee who led in the planning and implementation of the event. Felix Castillo, pastor of PIB, Eagle Pass is chairperson, Charlie Baird, Barksdale, member of committee, Ruben Chairez, pastor of PIB, Del Rio, member of committee, and Eagle Pass pastors Felipe Garcia, Jeff Oliver, & Rudy Hernandez. Thank you to Alma Chairez of Jerusalén, who coordinated the packing and distribution of the 550 backpacks of school supplies. This event is a part of the Association’s strategic plan called, “Igniting Passion.”
