History of Medieval Philosophy (Second-level Degree)

Prof. Onorato Grassi

COURSE AIMS

The aim of the course is to provide a specific approach to medieval philosophy on a methodological, historiographic and content-oriented basis by studying one or more writers’ views on certain topics and subjects. The knowledge and expertise acquired by students will concern the use and interpretation of medieval philosophical sources and a mastery of fundamental philosophical issues.

COURSE CONTENT

This year’s course is entitled “The truth in Thomas Aquinas”. The subject will be studied with specific reference to Thomas Aquinas’s own writings (Summa Theologiae, I q. 16, Q. Disp. De veritate, q. 1 and parallel texts referred to at lectures), within the context of Thomasian philosophy and with reference to historiography from the mid-20th century to the present day. The topic will be studied in close reference to writings (textual analysis, study of vocabulary and main lemmas) within a historical-reconstructive perspective of Aquinas’s thoughts and paying special attention to sources (Alberto Magno, Aristotle, Averroes).

Students will be asked to get actively involved in the studies both by making specific contributions and by attending seminars arranged for studying the text (a good knowledge of Latin is essential)
