-Finding a Job

Finding a Job

Often finding a suitable job is the hardest part in getting employment. Many people make the mistake of assuming that most jobs are “beneath them” or that many jobs “aren’t good enough or don’t pay enough”. In reality, very few people walk into a job that pays really well and doesn’t require a lot of time or effort, especially right out of high school. Most jobs that students apply for are entry-level jobs or jobs that start at the bottom in terms of different types of jobs in a company or organization. Once someone has acquired an entry-level job, it is then up to them to prove to their employer that they are capable and responsible enough to tackle new responsibilities and more difficult tasks that would lead to promotions and better pay.

Therefore, first thing people should keep in mind when trying to find a job is; “Where am I willing to start?” Once you have some realistic expectations as to what kind of job you are willing and able to do, you can then begin looking for that entry-level job. Hopefully that entry level job will be in a field or industry that could potentially lead to your dream job (remember all jobs provide you with experience and training that will help you in other jobs).

The first place to look for a job is either in a local newspaper’s “Help Wanted” section or by asking your friends and family if they know of anybody who is looking for help (often jobs are found by word of mouth). More and more high-end jobs (that often require post-secondary education) are being posted on the internet on websites such as monster.ca.

Directions: Acquire a copy of a local newspaper and find the “Help Wanted” section in the classifieds. Cut out 3 potential entry-level jobs that you think you might be able to apply for. For each of these 3 jobs advertisements, provide a short paragraph explaining why you think you would like to do that job and where you think it could lead. Keep in mind that you need to find a job advertisement that would either provide you with some important experience that you could use later on in life for your “dream job”. Or, it is job that could potentially lead to something bigger and better in that company (be sure to identify what you think that may be in your paragraph).

You will be marked out of 5 for each “Help Wanted” ad and paragraph

for a total of 15 marks.
