What are the summer school duty days and hours? / The summer school dates and hours are set by the school. As funding permits, schools have the flexibility to set up their summer school program to fit the school’s needs.
Guidelines:
  1. The district will observe the July 4th holiday and be closed July 5th as well.
  2. Schools must observe a minimum of 120 hours of summer school instruction.

Will the district provide examples of potential summer school schedules? / Yes, see examples listed:
Example A
Monday - Thursday
8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Teachers: June 10th – July 18th
  • 7 hrs x 23 Days = 161 Hrs. (1 hour Prep/Duty)
  • Students: June 11th – July 18th
  • 6 Hours per Day x 22 Days = 132 Hrs.
  • Early Dismissal on July 18 at 12 pm
  • NO Fridays
/ Example B
Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Teachers: June 10th – July 19th
  • 5.5 hrs x 28 Days = 154 Hrs. (1 hour Prep/Duty)
  • Students: June 11th – July 19th
  • 4.5 Hours per Day x 27 Days = 121.5 Hrs.
  • YES Fridays

What is the pay for teachers teaching summer school this year? / The standard teacher rate will be $30 per hour. Summer school teachers may be paid for up to an additional hour daily. (The hour may be used at the discretion of the principal for planning, duty or student supervision.)
Will 5th & 8th graders have to take a 3rd administration of STAAR this year? If so, what are the dates of the 3rd administration? / Yes, 5th& 8th graders will take a 3rd administration of STAAR this year.

STAAR Tests Eligible for Administration: Algebra I & II, Biology, Chemistry, English I - III (Reading), English I - III (Writing), Geometry, Physics, US History, World Geography, and World History
Will there be teacher training to prepare for summer school? / Yes, there will be teacher training to prepare for summer school. Teachers and substitutes will not be able to work summer school without attending the required training. The trainings and training scheduled are being developed and will be offered during school, after school, and on Saturdays. Teachers will be compensated according to the HISD Compensation policy.
Will summer meals be provided for all students whether or not they are in summer school? / All HISD students will have breakfast and lunch available to them daily at every available school. Suggested district-wide serving times: Breakfast 8:00 – 8:30 & Lunch 12:00 – 12:30. Schools may work with Food Services to adjust serving times as needed.
Are summer meals provided only to students who attend summer school? / No, children ages 1 to 18 regardless of summer school enrollment can receive a free, nutritionally balanced breakfast and lunch meal at HISD summer school sites. However, schools can determine the logistics for non-enrolled children participating in the summer meal program. Please contact HISD Food Services at 713-491-5944 for more information on the summer feeding program.
Will crossing-guards be provided for elementary schools? / Yes, crossing-guards will be provided for elementary schools. Schools will not need to allocate for crossing guards as HISD will automatically cover crossing guard costs for all elementary schools.
Will schools under Bond construction have transportation costs covered by HISD? / Yes, HISD will cover summer school transportation (setting up routes & cost) for schools being closed for summer due to Bond construction. Schools must be on the official Bond Office list of requested school summer closures. Please work with your School Office and/or the Bond Office to ensure you are appropriately placed on the official Bond Construction List.
What are the Summer School Programs offered? / Programs Offered:
  1. English Language Learners (ELL) – Pre/K students;
  2. *Extended School Year Services – Special Education Students;
  3. Promotion/Retention – Students failing to meet course or grade level standards;
  4. STAAR Re-test #3 for SSI – grades 5 and 8;
  5. Students scoring below standard on STAAR Reading & Math in grades 3–8;
  6. Accelerated Instruction for STAAR EOC re-testers;
  7. Accelerated Instruction for TAKS re-testers;
  8. Credit Accrual – Students accruing additional credits to graduate;
  9. ELL/Newcomers – Students who are academically behind peers;
  10. *Other School Based Programs (School Funded Enrichment Programs).
*Programs are not funded using Summer School Title I Funds
Are the Hattie Mae Administrative Offices open on Fridays? / No, the Hattie Mae Administrative Offices will be closed on Fridays beginning June 10th through August 2nd during the summer of 2013. However, the district will continue to maintain certain operations on Fridays in departments like Police, Technology, Maintenance, Construction, Food Service, Treasury, and other identified critical areas of operations.
