Thanks!

Table Captains,

Thank you so much for helping us ensure the 1st annual HOBY Hold’em Fundraiser will be a success! As a table captain, you are responsible for identifying 10 players who will be attending the HOBY Hold’em Tournament. If you find more than 10 people that want to participate in the event, that’s great. Do not forget to include yourself if you plan to play. If your friends and family are unable to attend the event, but would like to contribute to HOBY Indiana, we would encourage them to do so. As table captains, you may be approaching people who are unaware of HOBY. In your packet, we have provided information about HOBY for you to share.

About HOBY

HOBY Indiana is an affiliate of Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of tomorrow’s leaders by reaching high school sophomores. Our mission is to seek out, recognize, and develop leadership potential commencing with high school sophomores. We currently offer a four-day leadership seminar focusing on seven core values: volunteerism, excellence, organizational integrity, diversity, innovative thinking, community partnership, and lifelong learning leadership opportunities. This year 125 sophomores from high schools across Indiana attended the four-day conference held at ButlerUniversity. We are working to raise funds to expand our four-day leadership conference, and begin offering Community Leadership Education Workshops (CLEW), which are one-day versions of the HOBY Leadership Seminar program.

  4. If you don’t have enough chips to cover the large blind, and you are playing in the hand you are considered all in. The other blind stays the same and must be called by the other players. Minimum bet is the large blind.
  5. High card will determine who starts the deal (if tie first high card) or first ace
  6. All cards must stay on the table.
  7. All bets must be declared and made with one motion. For example: if you want to raise the bet you must make the bet and raise at one time or have called out your intentions. Once your bet is made there are no changes until your next turn.
  8. No other player or non-player may look at person’s cards while they are still in play. Also, no player can discuss what cards they folded until after the hand is complete. No player, non player or dealer may look at the next card in the deck (no peeking).
  9. If a player shows another player his cards after the hand is done, he must show all players.
  10. No player or dealer may touch another players cards until he has declared his intentions to fold.
  11. Deal will be passed between players. However, if the entire table agrees a permanent non-playing dealer can be assigned. A dealer will be provided once the tournament has 8 players remaining.
  12. Tables will be consolidated as players are removed from the tournament. If only one player from a table is being moved it will be the person up next for the big blind. You may be pulled to any table depending on how many players are left in the tournament.
  13. Once only 8 players remain, play will stop and everyone will be consolidated to 1 table. The dealer position will be determined by the high card.
  14. If a card is turned up on the deal, then the cards must be redealt.
  15. If called than you will be the first to show your cards and than proceed clockwise. Cards do not need to be shown unless you are called. If someone to your right shows a hand you cannot beat, you may muck your hand and not show your cards.
  16. If you muck your hand, (act as if to fold) even if by mistake you are out of the hand.
  17. Minimum bet will be the large blind.
  18. If two players are eliminated at the same time, the player with the most chips to start the hand will be positioned higher.
  19. When two players remain the dealer button will post the small blind and be the first to act on the first round of betting only.
  20. You must be in your seat while time is going. If you are not on your seat when it is your turn you automatically forfeit your hand. If you are a blind it will automatically be posted and your cards folded.
  21. If it is your deal and you are not present during playing time the cards are passed to the next person.

*If rules are not followed - 1st time reminded of the rules, 2nd time warning, 3rd time your out and forfeit your money.

Basic Play:

A Texas Hold’em poker game goes as follows:

  • Game start with two players placing out a predetermined amount of money so there is an initial amount to play for. This is called posting the blinds. These players are the two to the left of the dealer.
  • The dealer shuffles up a complete deck of 52 playing cards.
  • Each player is dealt two cards face down. These are called your hole or pocket cards.
  • Then there is a round of betting starting with the guy to the left of the two who posted the blinds. This round is usually referred to by the term pre-flop.
  • The amount bet must be a minimum of the large blind up to the entire amount of chips a player has
  • Players can check, raise, or fold.
  • After the betting round ends, the dealer discards the top card of the deck. This is called a burn card. This is done to prevent cheating.
  • The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the flop. These are communal cards that anyone can use in combination with their two pocket cards to form a poker hand.
  • There is another round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
  • After the betting concludes, the dealer burns another card and flips one more onto the table. This is called the turn card. Players can use this sixth card now to form a five card poker hand.
  • The player to the left of the dealer begins another round of betting. In many types of games, this is where the bet size doubles.
  • Finally, the dealer burns a card and places a final card face up on the table. This is called the river. Players can now use any of the five cards on the table or the two cards in their pocket to form a five card poker hand.
  • There is one final round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
  • After that, all of the players remaining in the game begin to reveal their hands. This begins with the player to the left of the last player to call. It's called the showdown.
  • The player with the best hand wins! CARDS PLAY THEMSELVES.
  • Any questions about the rules or disputes will be decided by the tournament director.
