WHY DO WE PRAY IN JESUS' NAME?

Brethren, the only way to give any answer about God or His son is to go to the scriptures and find the answer. I know many who will pray and not mention in Jesus’ name anywhere in their prayer. Does this mean God won’t answer them. Some have told me in the past no, that’s not the case God will answer your prayers whether it is done in Jesus’ name or not. When I hear that I think how sad it is for that individual because that is not what the Bible says. Notice what Jesus taught, "And in that day you WILL ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say unto you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, he will give you" (John 16: 23). Prayer in the name of Jesus, then, is of great importance. But we ask again is it a commandment? Once again let us allow the words of God answer for us. Paul through the Spirit taught: "For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (1Timothy 2: 5). Jesus officiates both as "advocate" and "High Priest" in the matter of people praying to the Father (I John 2:1; Hebrews 2:17-18). Jesus' mediation, advocacy, and High Priesthood are involved in praying in Jesus' name. We need to truly understand that prayer in Jesus' name means more than simply praying by Jesus' authority. To do something in another's name usually means simply by their authority (Acts 4:7, the view that "in the name of Jesus" only constitutes a formula which must be said is incorrect, Colossians 3:17). However, Jesus had taught them regarding prayer (Matthew 6: 5-15). Yet, Jesus said, “Until now you have asked nothing in my name..." (John 16: 24). A key to understanding prayer in the name of Jesus is "And in that day..."(vs. 23). Jesus had to die and resurrect (John 16:19-22). His resurrection would proclaim him "to be the Son of God with power..." (Romans 1:4). Brethren, to ask in Jesus' name means to acknowledge Jesus' authority, especially in the sense of his power or ability as the resurrected Son of God, the High Priest, advocate, and one mediator between God and man.

We need to always be aware that answered prayer is a wonderful blessing. Prayer is indeed designed for God's faithful people (I John 3:22). But also we must meet the conditions for our answered prayers. Yes, "in the name of Jesus" is one of those conditions. Through Jesus' efficacy and man's fidelity, the Christian enjoys answered prayer! Without Jesus and his power, there is no hope to be had (Ephesians 2: 12). Ernie
