MYP Spanish Phase 4 Señora Hill

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

MYP Spanish Phase 4 is an advanced course designed to provide students with academic communication skills: discuss currenttopics, read and understand differenttypes of text, and write according to audience and purpose. The course will focus on themes including art and its purpose, appearances and media,changing roles and responsibilities of relationships, and environmental issues. Students will research areas of interest with regards to the culture, geography, and history of the Spanish-speaking world and read current event articles in Spanish.

GOALS FOR MYP LANGUAGE ACQUISITION PROGRAM:

For students to feel confident with their Spanish abilities and develop an interest in the language and culture.

To challenge students to understand other perspectives and thereby learn more about themselves and their place in the global community.

Provide study and organizational strategies for students to take ownership of their learning.

GRADING:

Achievement grades will reflect students’ level of mastery of course objectives, content and skills and will be based on the four MYP language criteria: A: listening comprehension, B: reading comprehension, C: communication, D: language use. MYP rubrics will be used for all assignments. ATL grades will reflect students’ mastery of the MYP approaches to learning. Scores with specific comments will be updated in Veracross weekly in order for students and parents to understand students’ progress and learning throughout the course.

KEYS TO SUCCESS:

Take organized notes and review them regularly.

Study 15-20 minutes three times a week; do not wait until assessments.

Speak in Spanish in class.

Ask questions; ask in class and/or send Señora Hill an email.

Use vocabulary and grammar from the unit in language production.

EXPECTATIONS:

Mindful: Be an active participant in your learning. Reflect on your learning and

constantly strive to improve. Be aware when something is difficult and seek

help. Be kind to yourself and know that learning is a process.

Honest: Do your own work: plagiarism, cheating and the use of translation

websites are unacceptable and will be reported. Dishonest behavior will be

reported to the administration and consequences will be issued in accordance

with the student handbook.

Responsible: Bring materials to class so you can participate fully. Assignments must be printed and completed when class begins or they will be marked late. If you know you will be absent, tell Señora Hill ahead of time.

Supportive: We are a learning community. Everyone has their unique talents

and strengths that they can use to support others. Learning a new

language can be challenging so you should be supportive and encouraging of your classmates. If you are struggling to meet/master the course material and/or deadlines contact Señora Hill as soon as possible.

Peaceful: Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported. Find ways to create a caring and fun environment. Be kind to others and talk to someone if you cannot solve a conflict.
