Nicola Dominick

Degree studied: BSc in Architectural Studies then PgDip in Advanced Architectural Design

Year of graduation:2010

Why did you choose to study at Strathclyde?

I chose to study at Strathclyde because it had a dedicated Department for Architecture and the Engineering Faculty had a good reputation.

What did you like about the course?

I liked the wide variety of projects that we were assigned, whilst having the benefit of so many tutors from different architectural backgrounds to discuss our projects with.

Where did you work for your year out?

I worked in Stewart Associates Architects, a small practice in Ayrshire.

What sort of tasks and projects did you work on during your year out?

I worked on a variety of projects from drawing and preparing planning and warrant applications, designing presentation drawings and attending various site visits and meetings, all under the supervision of an architect.

Do you think the knowledge and skills you learned at Strathclyde set you up well for your time working in industry?

During my time at Strathclyde I learnt various drawing and presentation techniques which I was able to put into everyday use whilst working in practice.

The examination process at the university prepares you for working in practice. Discussing your project with a panel of examiners and your peers may seem daunting but receiving constructive criticism about your work prepares you to discuss and be open about your ideas, to ask for advice and work with others to create a stronger design.

What was your favourite part about your year out?

My favourite part of my year out was being on-site. The progression of a project from drawings to completion is a rewarding process.

Do you think that your year out has helped to influence your future career?

My year out allowed an insight into the working environment, which is different from university, and ensured me that this was what I wanted to do as a career.

What was your proudest achievement whilst at University?

My proudest achievement was graduating at the end of fourth year with good grades to allow me to progress into fifth year.

What are you doing now and your plans for the future?

I am currently working back at Stewart Associates Architects as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant, working towards my Part 3 examination to become a qualified architect.
