Fundraising Manager: Regular Giving

St Hugh’s College seeks to appoint a motivated fundraiser to work as full-time Regular Giving Manager, in the College’s Development Office. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the planning, implementation and management of a successful Regular Giving programme with the aim of increasing revenue and annual participation. The post holderwill also implement a comprehensive donor relations strategy for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and friends.

The College

St Hugh’s was founded in 1886 and occupies a large 14.5 acre site in the north of the city. It has beautiful gardens and has a reputation for being friendly and progressive. The College is now one of the largest in Oxford, with a total of around 600 undergraduate and graduate students and around 60 Fellows working in a wide range of subjects. St Hugh’s College is at an exciting point in its history following the appointment of a new Principal, The Rt Hon Dame Elish Angiolini DBE QC, in September 2012. The College now has a new five-year strategic plan and an ambitious fundraising campaign to underpin the goals of the campaign. The College has completed its most successful fundraising campaign to date culminating in bringing in £22M for the building of the Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre which was opened by HRH The Duke of Cambridge in September 2014. With this success behind us the College now wants to embark on a new campaign seeking funds for academic positions, scholarships, and bursaries as well as renovating our whole estate. Over several years, the College has developed and nurtured a mature regular giving programme, which presents an exciting opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic individual.

Development Office

TheDirector of Development is responsible for all aspects of alumni relations and fundraising for the College. The Development Team includes 5 full-time staff (including this role and the Director). The postholder will report directly to the Director of Development.

TITLE:Fundraising Manage: Regular Giving

REPORTS TO: Development Director

DIRECT REPORTS:None

SALARY RANGE: Circa £30k

TERMS:Permanent after the successful completion of a 3 month probation period

Key Tasks and Responsibilities include:

To take overall responsibility for implementing theCollege’s RegularGiving Programme, conducting specific appeals by agreed deadlines and achieving various revenue and participation targets.

Annual Telethon

  • To work with consultants to develop, organise and conduct the two-week annual telephone appeal, recruiting, developing and maintaining a base of trained and motivated student callers.
  • To ensure appropriate administrative support is provided for the successful conduct of the annual telethon.
  • To take personal responsibility for achieving various revenue and participation targets as part of the telethon.
  • To raise awareness and understanding of the benefits of the annual telethon among internal and external constituencies, and in doing so, enhance and improve the overall culture of support and giving from Alumni to the College.

Annual Mail Appeals

  • To work with the Director of Development to plan and draft the annual direct mail appeal, parents’ appeal and student leavers’ appeal and ‘email ask’, with a view to acquiring new donors.
  • To work on engaging particular segments of the database, such as the student body to facilitate these appeals.
  • To generate additional revenue and increase participation in each appeal.
  • To achieve various targets as set by the Director of Development.
  • Evaluate the success and effectiveness of each appeal and use new data acquired to improve our annual approach.
  • Consider creative new approaches and the latest thinking in best practice to implement innovative new ideas and add value to our current programme.
  • To conduct any additional mail appeals as required and appropriate.

Communications

  • To communicate effectively to internal and external constituencies on the progress, success and results of regular giving activities.
  • To be an active member of the College’s Web Team and take personal responsibility for updating the Development and Alumni Web pages and social media pages.
  • To draft fundraising brochures, newsletters and materials as required.
  • To write an agreed number of articles for the annual Magazine, reporting on regular giving activities.

Database Management and Reports

  • Maintain and improvethe quality of the database by making use of various tools such as data cleaning.
  • Enrich the quality of our database by drafting questionnaires and seeking creative and effective ways to encourage Alumni and friends to update their details.
  • To work with the Director of Development to prepare an annual accountability report on the use of the funds for inclusion in a St Hugh’s Donor Report.
  • To run reports and extract data for inclusion in the Collegiate University Benchmarking study.
  • To run regular and ad hoc reports from Raiser’s Edge as required.

Stewardship and further Cultivation of Existing Donors

  • To implement stewardship strategies to thank regular donors effectively and maintain donor loyalty.
  • To take responsibility for the drafting and updating of various thank you letters.
  • To personally take responsibility for writing the annual donor report, (which aims to thank donors for their support), in an engaging, creative and compelling way.
  • To attend and contribute to the annual donors’ event and an agreed number of Alumni events through the year.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as may be required from time to time by the Director of Development.

Person Specification

Knowledge, skills and experience required:

Essential

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) and belief in the value of education.
  • Motivated by achieving and exceeding targets and achieving deadlines.
  • Positive, flexible attitude.
  • Some previous experience of fundraising and knowledge of current best practice in regular giving.
  • Able to work independently and effectively manage your own time, while also being a team player.
  • Excellent communicator, with confident, creative and sophisticated writing skills.
  • Excellent IT skills, experience of using various packages and experience of using social media.
  • Strong administration skills. Ability to organise and prioritise multiple competing tasks.
  • Knowledge of the database Raiser’s Edge and/or similar access databases.
  • Experience of developing and managing relationships successfully with external customers in a target driven environment.
  • Experience of working in a small busy team, juggling a varied workload, in a sometimes pressurised environment.
  • Tactful, diplomatic and comfortable working with a wide range of people.
  • Prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of managing a Regular Giving Programme in the education sector.
  • Professional experience of carrying out research.
  • Professional experience of successfully applying to Trusts and Foundations.
  • Experience of being part of, or managing, a telephone fundraising campaign.
  • Some knowledge of the current UK Higher Education Funding situation and an interest in learning more.
  • Knowledge of St Hugh’s College, Oxford University and the tutorial system of teaching.
  • Knowledge of UK tax advantages for making charitable donations.
  • Previously attended CASE courses, or equivalent, and awareness of latest trends in the UK development/ fundraising sector.
