FRONT OF THE BOX:

  • Use a separate sheet of paper to create the cover before gluing it to your box.
  • Invent a name for the cereal that is related to the title of the book and sounds like a cereal. Do not use the exact title of the book here. You may want to look at some real cereal boxes to get some ideas. For example, for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, you might invent a cereal called “Wizard Wands”. INCLUDE YOUR NAME AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX

RIGHT SIDE OF BOX:

  • Make a list of ingredients that includes the story elements Characters and Setting.
  • Under the heading “Ingredients,” list the main characters and write a sentence about each.
  • Then describe the setting. Make sure that this portion of your work is word-processed/typed prior to placing it on the cereal box.

LEFT SIDE OF BOX:

  • Write a complete third-person perspective summary of the book (DO NOT begin with “My book is about”) that includes rising action, conflicts, climax, and the resolution in the book. Try using words that will “grab” readers’ attention and make them want to buy your cereal.

BACK OF BOX:

  • Invent your unique sequel to the story (separate from one that may have been published prior). Begin where your original book ends. Create a new dilemma with a rising action that includes a new conflict or builds on one from the previous story. Your falling action in your sequel concludes with a resolution that ties up any loose/conflicting situations.

TOP OF BOX:

  • Include the title, author, number of pages, and color in the number of stars you would give this book if you were a book critic. The maximum number of stars (if you like the book) you can give is (5).
  • Cut out the template on the next page (or bottom back of this sheet) to glue to the top of your cereal box or create your own. Just be sure to include ALL specifics listed above.

COMMERCIAL PRESENTATION:

  • Your presentation will be a 30-60 second television commercial. Practice your commercial to make sure of the wording and the timing. Don’t just encourage the audience by using opinion words (exciting, great, interesting, best, good, etc.), but also by featuring elements of the book-scenes,facts, etc. Be dynamic and try to convince the audience to buy the cereal whether you liked the book or not. *Optional: Be a character from the book when you present your commercial.
