Radiation Safety Officers and NRMP Permittee Commands,

[This e-mail was addressed to all applicable medical/research commands, and was resent due to technical problems with the original message]

This email is to inform you that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has changed labeling requirements when shipping certain "Class 7" radioactive material packages by air. The new labels must be at least 105 mm x 74 mm (4.25” x 3”) in size. The labels must also be printed in color and appropriately fastened to the shipping container using clear tape or other adhesive. The new requirements were implemented on January 1, 2007.

The new labeling requirements apply to the following radioactive materials packages:

·  Excepted Quantity - Empty Packaging (UN2908)

·  Excepted Quantity - Articles containing natural uranium, thorium or DU (UN2909)

·  Excepted Quantity - Limited Quantity (UN2910)

·  Excepted Quantity - Instrument and Articles (UN2911)

Printable versions of the new IATA labels are available in PDF format on the Radiation Safety Academy's website at http://www.radiationsafetyacademy.com/IATAlabels.html. Copies have also been attached to this message.

Adhesive backed labels (style L355R) can also be purchased from LabelMaster (1-800-621-5808) or online at http://www.labelmaster.com/index.cfm?section=searchresults&type=products&itemid=668256&title1=Quick%20Search.
