WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO

➔An Echocardiogram is a test that uses high frequency sound waves that form pictures of the heart. The picture formed shows the heart’s chambers, walls, valves, and blood vessels connected to the heart. Tests may be ordered by your doctor to see what your heart looks like and locate any abnormalities. There is no harm or side effects.

➔The students of WayMED have gone to East Elementary School on the days of November 2nd and 3rd. We got to help the nurses of the school do the vision and hearing screenings for the 1st through 5th graders. With these tests it requires a lot of patience with the kids. The vision tests, we had the kids stand a few feet away from the board, and they covered one eye while they read a line of letters to us. They then repeated this with the next eye. The hearing tests, we had the kids put on a headset and we played a series of sounds at 3 different frequencies into each ear, and if they heard it then they would raise their hand to let us know they heard it.

➔The Waynesville Medical Career Class always welcomes copious amounts of guest speakers to delve into the background and current details of their career and the required educational backgrounds. The first guest speaker was Maleena Little John, a trainer at the Army Wellness Center, where trainers come up with nutritional plans and exercise regimes for patients. Dr. Steven Williamson was an occupational health physician, who monitors workplace conditions and ensure the health of employees. Dr. Ryan, a primary care physician, treats patients with a large range of conditions and refers patients to specialists. Captain Sanders, a nurse, and Major Sikka, a doctor, both specialized in public health, where they emphasize the prevention of disease and injury rather than the treatment of such. Ralph Amested, an industrial health physician, oversees the treatment of occupational related diseases and is primarily concerned with regulations and protocol rather than the focused healthcare of a patient. Lieutenant Meyer, a health specialist, promotes health in schools, communities, and local organizations through programs and hospitals. Lastly, the group was visited by a sports psychologist, who allowed the students to participate in games and activities that helped explain the job description of a sports psychologist. Sports psychologists assist in the achievement of higher health through understanding how each individual’s body receives and requires exercise and healthy living.
