FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – MSc Flexible Managed

What are prerequisites?

Prerequisites are the requirements you need to study a module. Some modules do not have perquisites but a number of modules do. If a module has a prerequisite this will be shown on the module descriptor. If you have not previously studied at Edinburgh Napier you may not have the exact module prerequisite therefore you may be asked to provide evidence to the module leader of your previous study at another institution. If you are unsure whether you have the sufficient prerequisite you should check with the module leader.

Am I able to change my module choices?

After you have enrolled online for your modules at the beginning of the trimester all subsequent changes must be made by the end of the first teaching week. Remember to check your timetable thoroughly to make sure there are no clashes.

You are permitted to change your modules during the first week of teaching for the following reasons:

·  The module is full

·  The module leader has informed you that you do not have the appropriate prerequisite to study the module

·  The Module Leader has changed the timing of the module and this has resulted in a timetable clash for you

·  You have attended the first class and realise that you have made an inappropriate choice (you may only change 1 of your module choices for this reason)

What is my timetable?

You are required to look up the individual module timetables and select modules where there are no timetable clashes.

Your timetable is built module by module. It is easiest to start with a blank timetable and look up each module individually. Modules may have a lecture (L), tutorial (T) and/or practical (P). It is common for postgraduate modules to group themselves into blocks of three hours combining a lecture and tutorial into one.

How do I know which tutorial group I am in?

Where there is more than one tutorial group for a module students will be divided evenly across the tutorials. The module you have chosen may be a compulsory module for students on other programmes and therefore all spaces in a particular tutorial may already be taken up by these students. For this reason you may not get your first choice with regard to the timing of the tutorial group that you attend.

The method for allocating students to tutorial groups differs from module leader to module leader, for example, module leaders may ask students to sign up personally to particular slots, or they will allocate you to them once you have attended the first lecture.

When is the timetable published?

The timetable will be published at least 6 weeks prior to the start of each trimester.

What is the calculation for a master’s degree with distinction?

A master’s degree with distinction will be awarded to a student who has satisfied all programme specific requirements and has gained a minimum of 180 credits at SCQF level 11 of which at least either:

a) a minimum total of 120 credits at SCQF level 11 are at a grade of D1 or above

b) a minimum total of 80 credits at SCQF level 11 are at a grade of D2 or above plus a minimum of 20 credits at a grade of D1
