I. Overview of Financial Aid

A. What is Financial Aid?

Financial Aid is money provided by the federal and state governments, colleges, and private organizations. It is meant to supplement your family's ability to pay for college costs. These costs cover such things as tuition, room and board, book/supplies, and other expenses. The amount you receive is based on the cost of the college minus the expected family contribution.

B. What are the various forms of Financial Aid?

Grants and Scholarships - These are outright gifts of money. Grants are from the federal or state government, and are based on need. Scholarships are based on merit and/or need.

Work/Study Program - This is a part-time job on campus. The job is arranged through the financial aid office of the campus being attended.

Loans - These are a significant part of most aid packages. They must be repaid, but most often not until after you graduate. Interest rates on these are usually lower than other types of loans.

C. How do I apply for Financial Aid?

Scholarships are available at different times of the year. Use this resource guide, check with your counselor, go to the Guidance website and frequently check the scholarship bulletin board outside the Guidance Office for new scholarships. Applying for grants, loans, and work study programs starts during January of your senior year. The critical first step is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Form (FAFSA), at www.fafsa.ed.gov and the NYS TAP form at www.hesc.ny.gov.

Certain colleges might require a Profile form - check with your counselor to see if this form is needed.

Filling out these forms is actually a fairly simple process. The Franklin Academy Guidance Department offers a Financial Aid Workshop in February to help parents file the FAFSA form on-line. More information will follow.

The first step is to get a username and password. Directions follow.

D. What Next?

After you submit the FAFSA to the processor you will receive an e-mail document called the Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR is a verification form of the information provided on the FAFSA. Review the information and follow directions. Students attending New York State colleges will also be required to fill out a Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) form in order to receive additional financial assistance. This form may also be filed on-line.

USERNAME AND PASSWORD SIGN-UP PROCEDURE

In order to facilitate the financial aid process and to have access to the funds for which your family is eligible, we urge both parent and student to follow this simple process described below. When completed, you will each have an individual username and password to be used to sign your financial aid forms. Please note, you must have an e-mail in order to complete this process.

To apply for a Username and Password follow these simple directions:

1.  Go to StudentAid.gov/fsaid

1.  Click “Create an FSAID Now”

1.  Enter your personal information, as prompted on the computer screen. This will include creating your own username and password.

BOTH parent and student should complete this procedure using his/her own information only. Both of you will need to sign the financial aid application. Having a Username and Password allows you to sign electronically and not have to print and mail a signature page.

If you, the parent, have already received a Username and Password for another student in your family, the parent MAY use that Username and Password to apply for financial aid for the current senior, but the student will have to get his/her own Username and Password.

IMPORTANT: This is only the first step. You must still complete the application process for financial aid.

II. Scholarships

A. Introduction to Scholarships

The information in this resource guide, while extensive, is NOT all inclusive. We encourage you to seek out awards through your local churches, synagogues, parents' place of employment, community clubs, and organizations, etc. Seniors should begin to check the bulletin board on a weekly basis beginning in September. (This information can also be found on the Guidance Department website, www.malonecsd.org. Click on Franklin Academy, then under Departments click on Guidance.) College specific scholarships may also be found in college catalogues or through the college financial aid office.

Most of the scholarships arrive in our office after December. However, student should start checking the scholarship board on a regular basis. Each and every scholarship is listed on the Scholarship Board and on the website. The name, eligibility criteria, and due date are also all listed on the board and on the website. It is imperative that the student check this board or the website on a regular basis and comply with the due dates. Applications for the scholarships listed in this guide are available in the Guidance Office unless otherwise noted.

Many students are obtaining scholarships over the internet. Most of the scholarships request an official high school transcript. Please request this at the Guidance Office.

It is absolutely necessary that these scholarships arrive at their destination by the due date, whether it is mailed by the student or by the Guidance Office. Allow time when observing due dates for completion of recommendations, transcripts, and mailing time.

The financial aid/scholarship process is an ever changing one. For this reason we cannot guarantee all scholarships listed in this book will be offered every year. Conversely, new ones may arise that are NOT listed in this book. Check with your counselor, the bulletin board, the website, or refer to the specific application for accurate, up-to-date information.

B. Internet Scholarship Resources

Throughout your search beware of companies that charge fees or guarantee scholarships. Offers that guarantee scholarships or ask for money to 'hold' the scholarship may be a scam.
