Course Mater als
The following is highly recommended to help the student succeed:
1. Pencils
2. Erasers
3. Textbook (students may sign out a book to use at home or students will be given a username and password to an online textbook); in class, we will use the textbook on the iPads
4. Loose-leaf notebook paper
5. Graph paper (Optional)
6. Calculator (Optional) The following are suggestions:
ü TI-30XS (inexpensive)
ü TI-Nspire (Non Cas model) (excellent calculator if you want to purchase one that your child will use throughout high school and college)
ü It is not required but homework will be very time-consuming without access to a scientific calculator. The TI-Nspire will be available for student use at school.
7. Math Binder – (3-ring)…1 ” to 1-1/ 2” recommended with pockets. The binder is to keep class notes, assignments, and exams. (Color does not matter!)
8. Dividers (for binder ~ pack of 5)
ü Dividers/Tabs: Notes, PODs, Homework, Tests, Cal Tricks
Grading (9 weeks grade)
Activity Points 10%
Homework 30%
Tests 60%
F irst Semester Grade : Second Semester Grade:
1st 9 weeks 37.5% 3rd 9 weeks 37.5%
2nd 9 weeks 37.5% 4th 9 weeks 37.5%
Semester Test 25% State Test 25%
Activity Points
Students will be expected to complete 100 activity points. Students will be given a list of activities that they may choose from to complete this requirement at the beginning of each nine weeks. There are many ways to complete the 100 points! This is not extra credit.
Homework
Homework will be graded daily. Students will be given ? credit for each problem attempted and missed (1/2 credit no matter how big or little the mistake). Students will be given an opportunity to make corrections on the majority of their homework assignments (if they wish). On corrections, students must rewrite the problem and show all work on a separate sheet of paper. If a student redoes the problem correctly, full credit will be given back. All missing assignments/homework corrections for a chapter are due by the day of the chapter test. It is the student’s responsibility to get missed work turned in promptly.
Test Grades
Each student will be given tests periodically. If your child doesn’t take an active part in his/her learning, grades will begin dropping quickly. Struggling students are encouraged to take advantage of all opportunities to help raise scores. Study guides will be given before every chapter test. It is vitally important to not let academic problems go unaddressed, especially in high school math classes! Students will have an opportunity to retake any test (usually students are given 2 weeks after the graded test is given back). Retakes must be done in math tutoring after school.
E xtra Credit
There are 3 ways to earn extra credit:
1. Sticker Page.
ü Students receive stickers for receiving a 93 or higher on homework and tests. Homework stickers are worth 1 point. Test stickers are worth 2 points. 10 points worth of stickers earns an average point at the end of the nine weeks. (Max: 2 average points per grading period)
2. Folder Check.
ü Students may turn in their binder with all notes, PODs, homework assignments, tests, and cal tricks in an orderly fashion to receive 2 average points the last week of each nine weeks.
3. Box Tops for Education.
ü Completed sheet (contains 25 box tops) adds 25 points to a test grade. (MAX: 2 sheets per 9 weeks). Only Mrs. Reed has the sheets that will be accepted. The box tops must be glued or taped to the sheet.
Classroom Expectations
§ Bring pencil (PENS are not allowed), loose-leaf paper, binder, and homework to class daily.
§ Be respectful to everyone.
§ Be in classroom when the tardy bell rings.
§ Listen and follow directions.
§ Disrespect, sleeping, and repetitive zeros on homework will not be tolerated…if any of these become a problem, students will be sent to the office.
Personal Statement
My goal is that every student learns and feels successful in math. A student who works hard, tries, and attends school will NOT fail. I want each of you to earn the highest grade possible; however, learning the material is what you need most. Good grades will follow. Students are expected to do all assignments to the best of their ability and seek help if they have trouble. Assignments are necessary to help learn the required material. Practice is essential to learning algebra. Please feel free to contact me at any time during the year if you have any questions. My door is always open for questions for students: before or after school or during my planning period (which is 4th period). It has been my experience that a student gets as much out of a class as they put into it. If you need to speak to me, feel free to call the high school at 569-8818 or you may email me. My email address is . If you would like to receive text messages regarding upcoming assignments, announcements, etc. text the message, @ohsreed___ (the class period, 1-3), to the number, 81010,. Also, if you have an iPad, you can download the following app: pearson etext for schools (the app should have a picture of a book and on the book “for Schools”). This is the textbook on the iPad. The username is ipad ___ (numbers 01-030, a number goes after ipad) and the password is ohs000 (the password is the same for all usernames). Also an online textbook is accessible at www.pearsonsuccessnet.com (each student will be given a username and password at the beginning of the year).
