Farewell Mr. Tomie
For the last six months, Seven Hills hosted Mr. Hiroki Tomie, an intern teacher from Japan. We were lucky to be in one of his classes. In his class, we learned from each other by studying a topic and then doing presentations. We presented about Japanese history, language, food and modern life. We got to learn about places in Japan like Hokkaido, Osaka, Tokyo, Shikoku and Kyushu. When studying different time periods of Japanese history, we saw a video clip about ninjas. Our class also played an awesome game called “Paper Sumo Wrestling.” Le was the champion.
We learned how to say and write some things in Japanese. We can greet each other and say some other things. If we go to a Japanese restaurant, we’ll know how to speak Japanese to tell them what we want to eat. We also know what to say before and after a meal to show good manners.
In Japan, if you get in big trouble with your parents or your teacher, you may have to do a “doge za” which means that you have to get down on your knees and bow down over and over again for a very long time as a big apology.
There are many things in America that come from Japan. Right now, Japanese animation is very popular. The most popular one in Japan is called “One Piece.” However, the one we like the best in America is called “Naruto.” Did you know that you have to read Japanese books from right to left and back to front?
Mr. Tomie will go back to Japan on October 10th. Mr. Tomie wants to be an English teacher in Japan. His English is very good so we think he will do a good job. We hope he has a safe trip back and a happy future. We hope that if he sees Mr. Funahashi in Japan, he will tell him that we said “hello.”
