FairviewFFA Member Earns Agricultural Education Proficiency Award

OKLAHOMA CITY — Addison Spicer of the Fairview FFA Chapter earned first-place honors in the 2017 Oklahoma FFA Agricultural Education Proficiency Award area during the 92nd Oklahoma FFA Convention May 2.

Madison Stephens of the Weatherford FFA Chapter and Brianna Roat of the Edmond FFA Chapter earned second- and third-place honors, respectively.

Spicer said she has focused on enhancing agricultural literacy at Fairview Public Schools for her supervised agricultural experience. She also said she helped train volunteer high school students to conduct an agricultural literacy program at a local elementary school.

“I am excited that I have the opportunity to share my passion of agriculture with the next generation,” Spicer said.

Spicer was also a teacher’s assistant for the agricultural education program, where she helped teach more concepts to students.

After graduation, Spicer plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in agricultural communications and agricultural education.

The agricultural education proficiency award is designed to recognize students who are involved in a supervised agricultural experience related to agricultural education. SAEs related to education and extension include, but are not limited to, youth mentoring, agricultural education departmental assistants, Partners in Active Learning Support mentors and student coordinators, students developing and conducting information materials and presentations for civic organizations and school-aged youth, and students who are involved in SAEs surrounding educating the public about the broad topics of agriculture, agricultural education and the FFA.

The 17-year-old Fairview FFA member’s agricultural education instructors and FFA advisers are Jerrod Lundry and Vince McGolden.

This award is sponsored at the state level by McDonald’s of Oklahoma, OSU Agricultural Education andRobetha Fariss.At the national level, this event is sponsored by The James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation and the Tulsa Welding School. The Oklahoma CareerTech Foundation provides a $1,000 state winner scholarship.

FFA is an integral part of the Agricultural Education division in the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education system.
