Sabbatical Leaves

Faculty / Description
Leitschuh, Gloria / Spring, 2003. As part of the Department of Counseling and Student Development’s continued efforts to promote and support cultural awareness diversity, I am proposing a cross-cultural analysis of psychological diagnostic criteria to be completed. This project is also proposed in light of Eastern’s current “Commitment to Excellence” which includes enhanced quality of academic programs, a heightened state and national image, and an increase in diversity among students, faculty, and staff.
Powell, Barbara / Fall, 2002. The focus on this research was to become familiar with Gullah/Geechee people and their culture. The Gullah (referred to as Geechees in some areas, especially in Georgia) are descendants of slaves who worked plantations along the Southeast coast from North Carolina to Northern Florida, including the Sea Islands off the coast.
Fraker, French / Spring, 2002. The purpose of this project was to investigate the similarities and differences of the substance abuse prevention/education policies between the United States and the Netherlands. During this sabbatical I traveled to Maastricht Netherlands and taught at the Masstricht Center for Transatlantic Studies. The course I taught required students to examine the drug policies of the U.S. and the Netherlands as well as the drug policies of China.
Lyles, Judith / Spring, 2002. The primary purpose of this assignment was to identify possible obstacles that teachers and counselors encounter in cross-cultural communication, such as unattractive prejudices or unconscious biases that inhibit productive teaching/counseling outcomes and explore effective solutions in diversity training. To accomplish these objectives, Dr. Lyles interviewed nine successful professionals in the field of multicultural education.
