F2 Post in Paediatrics

Paediatrics in South Tyneside NHS Trust is a trust–wide service though the only in-patient service is at South Tyneside District Hospital. The F2 doctor undergoing a placement in Paediatrics would spend 4 months as part of the medical team caring for children. They would see ill children in in-patient, out-patient and A&E settings with appropriate clinical supervision. The in-patient unit at South Tyneside hospital is in the form of a Short Stay Assessment Unit. This has been fully operational since December 2012. Children are admitted to the unit who need in patient care for less than 24hours but children who need care for more than 24hours are transferred to in patient units at either Sunderland or Newcastle. There are out-patient units in South Tyneside and Palmer Community hospitals, latter dealing with children with long term conditions. There will be an opportunity to work with paediatric nurse practitioners in the Special Care Baby Unit, community and Children’s A&E(Emergency Care children-ECC)

Generic skills

·  Appreciation of different levels of care from community to in-patient and how these interchange.

·  Communication skills – especially in working with ill children. Also learning communication skill in dealing with parents of ill children.

·  Note keeping.

·  Medico-legal issues around consent and the child.

·  Dealing with ethical issues surrounding treatment of severely disabled infants in SCBU and non-accidental injury.

·  Team working with medical and expert nursing team.

Specific skills

·  Resuscitation of new-born and paediatric patients.

·  Assessment, stabilisation and management of an ill child .

·  Practical skills e.g.

o  Canulation

o  Airway management

o  Lumbar puncture.

·  Drug dosing in children.

·  Vaccination.

·  Assessment of children suspected of non-accidental injury.

·  Opportunity to acquire skills in dealing with common paediatric problems like Constipation, UTI, diabetes and developmental delay in general paediatric/ specialist clinics.

There will be a consultant-led teaching during morning handover and during ward rounds in SCBU and ECC. There are departmental educational meetings every Thursday for one and half hours. Each F2 doctor will have a named educational supervisor and a named clinical supervisor.
