ARENA DI VERONA
96th OPERA FESTIVAL 2018
from 22nd June to 1st September
The 96th edition of the historic Opera Festival, being staged at Arena di Verona from 22nd June to 1st September 2018 for 47 evenings, will feature great internationally famous performers along with the Verona Arena artists and technicians.
The Festival will be inaugurated by a new production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen, one of the most performed operas in the world, followed by great classics proposed in suggestive productions, as well as the return of Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi with the production that inaugurated the 2017 summer season.
The programme includes five opera titles: beside Carmen and Nabucco, Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, Turandot by Giacomo Puccini and Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini. The bill will be further enriched by two special evenings not to be missed: Roberto Bolle and Friends, the unmissable appointment with ballet and dance, and the Special Opera Night for a unique Festival at international level, which has continued to astonish and excite huge audiences for over a hundred years.
The 2018 Festival opens on 22nd June with Carmen, the Bizet masterpiece particularly appreciated by Arena spectators: the opera will be staged for 13 evenings with a new production by Argentinean director Hugo de Ana, just waiting to be discovered.
Further performances: 29 June (9:00 pm) – 6, 11, 17, 21 July (9:00 pm) – 3, 9, 12, 22, 25, 28, 31 August (8:45 pm).
As is the tradition, on the following evening (23rd June), there will be the debut of the opera that is a symbol of the Arena summer season: Verdi’s Aida, staged for 16 dates with the impressive production created by Franco Zeffirelli and enriched with costumes by Anna Anni.
Further performances: 28 June (9:00 pm) – 8, 10, 14, 19, 22, 27 July (9:00 pm) – 2, 5, 7, 11, 19, 23, 29 August (8:45 pm) – 1 September (8:45 pm).
The third opera, scheduled for 5 performances from 30th June, is Puccini’s Turandot, staged with the production created in 2010 by the genius of Franco Zeffirelli (director and scenographer), with costumes by Academy Award winning designer Emi Wada.
Further performances: 5, 13, 18, 26 July (9:00 pm).
From 7th July, Verdi’s Nabucco returns for 6 evenings, with the successful production that inaugurated the 2017 Festival, directed by Arnaud Bernard (also the costume designer) and with set design by Alessandro Camera.
Further performances: 12, 20, 28 July (9:00 pm) – 10, 18 August (8:45 pm).
Lastly, from 4th August for 5 evenings, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia will transform the Roman amphitheatre into the huge garden created by Hugo de Ana in 2007 with the entertaining choreography of Leda Lojodice. Further performances: 8, 17, 24, 30 August (8:45 pm).
But the surprises are not yet over: on 25th July, on the Arena programme for the fifth consecutive year, the eagerly awaited show Roberto Bolle and Friends returns, bringing great dance to the Arena, whereas on 26th August there will be a magic special event paying tribute to great opera with exceptional guests.
