Premiere Menus jma260 rev 04/22/2015
Exporting for DVD w/o menus: Cats Example
Overview
- Use Premiere to export the project to an mp4 file : Done
- Start Encore
- Import the mp4 file into Encore as a timeline.
- Specify what to do when user inserts the DVD
- What to do when DVD ends
- Decide if we want additional chapters (scenes)
- Create main and submenu menus (eventually)
Steps
Use Encore to create a DVD, with or without menus
- You can select a pre-built DVD menu from a library or create your own: We’ll do the former.
Note: Menus are nothing more than Photoshop psd files.
Note: I saved a zip file containing my assets including the mp4 file. If you want to use mine, download and unzip into Projects the file named bundle
General Procedure we will follow:
- Start Encore
- File >New Project (or choose an existing Encore project .ncor extension)
- Import the mp4 file that we exported from Premiere (Import as timeline, to be precise)
- What the DVD player should do when movie starts/ends ends
Let’s get started
Using Encore to create an auto play DVD w/o Menus
- Start Adobe Encore
- Select New Project ( will result in an .ncor extension) (or open existing one)
Choose new project
- Give the Encore project a name (I chose CatsDVD)
Set the Location value to the same folder as your mp4 file (InClass>Premiere>Projects
- Click OK
You’ll see a message saying transcoding is going on:
Choose Workspace>Editing
- Next, choose File>Import as Timeline
- Browse to your mp4. file that was exported from Premiere….catsmp4.mp4 in my case (or your mp4).
- The first frame of the movie shows in the Monitor window
- Notice the right hand side: That’s where we tell Encore “where to go”…
We will modify several of these parameters, which change as we continue along
- Insert your DVD
- Click the Build tab (DON’T click the Build button, yet)…or Window>Build
Result:
- Be sure to choose Format:DVD and Output:DVD Disc
The Destination area,
- If you’re using re-writable DVDs (some of you are) you might want to click the Auto Erase …
- The Recorder device listed is your DVD drive
- The write speed, leave alone
Drop down to Disc Info
- Choose the 4.7GB
Region Codes: Choose All Regions (The US is region 1)
Copy protection next
- Notice that you can make the DVD copy protected
Complete Build section:
That’s it for this section (Project information)
- Click the Project tab,
- Click anywhere inside Project to show the Disc panel on the right side, top
Properties>Disc tab…upper right corner…see above
- Click the Disc Option as below
Note: If you can’t find the Disc tab, click in an unused area of the Project window
- To show chapter names: right-click on the timeline, select show chapter names
Eventually we will add 4-5 chapters/scenes
Tell Encore what to do when the DVD is inserted into the player: Assume no menus first
- Use the First Play drop down (Disc tab), or use the whip and set First Play to Chapter 1 (Encore created Chapter 1) It should already be set to Chapter 1:
Can add additional chapters, which we’ll do later
- Look for a tiny yellow object at the very beginning of the timeline: That represents Chapter 1
Try this (whip)
- Drag the First Play icon to the Chapter 1 on the Timeline (Tiny yellow object) …called whip method
OK, now we have told Encore what to tell the DVD player should do when the DVD is inserted; how about the end of the DVD?
- Click the Project tab
- Click on your timeline name ( Catsmp4 for me)
- You should then see the Timeline panel on right side:
:
Note: Make sure all the files are transcoded, if not, right click and choose to transcode:
Specify Ending Action
- Choose End Action in Timeline panel
- Set Timeline> End Action to “Stop”(Or go back to Chapter 1) (use whip or the dropdown)
- I’ll send the viewer back to Chapter 1
Or, might have chosen Stop
Burn the DVD…if you have a +RW if another format, bon’t burn. (don’t actually burn yet, some of the dvds are not RW)
- Select the Build tab
- Click Build button
- Will see some warnings…
- Click view to see the problem(s):
It appears we should have specified what to do when the Title button is clicked on the DVD remote
(Note: You do not have to correct the error, your DVD will play just fine)
- To eliminate the error message, set the Title Button property to Stop
To Preview: File>Preview
- Click Start in the Check Project window (Skip for now)
- Will see:
- DVD would be burned
- Play it to make sure it plays OK
File>Save As>CatsNoMenu
- Insert the DVD; it should auto start
