ELI Committee Project Recap

Modern Architecture and Society - Fall, 2004

Professor Sandy Isenstadt

November 15, 2004

I. Team Orientation

Beginning in late May 2004, the ELI Support Team met regularly to work on Sandy Isenstadt’s Modern Architecture and Society (fall semester) art history class. The Team currently consists of Pamela Patterson from ITS, Sarah Coe – ELI Support Specialist, Helen Chillman from the Visual Resources Collection, Pedro Soto from Web, Workstation & Digital Consulting Services, Katie Bauer – ELI Interface Librarian, and Hannah Bennett – Team Convener – from the Arts Library.

The Team was fortunate to work with a faculty member who is exceptionally organized and met all of the deadlines agreed upon by everyone. In addition, the individual team members collaborated and communicated well together. To date, the Team has completed its fall course work for Prof. Isenstadt and will re-convene sometime in December to discuss Isenstadt’s spring semester ELI course.

II. Images

Before work began on Prof. Isenstadt’s course, approximately 400 class images were already digitized and available through Insight. With the assistance of Helen Chillman and Sarah Coe, Prof. Isenstadt finalized his image selections from slides, lanternslides, and mounted photographs for Insight.

Over the course of this semester, the Visual Resources staff cataloged, Photoshopped and loaded into Insight a grand total of 1,356 images for Professor Isenstadt’s class. Again, this total combines new images, as well as digitized mounted photos (approximately 80), lantern slides (approximately 70), and scanning of old slides (the vast majority).

III. Classes Site

Professor Isenstadt worked closely with Pam Patterson on the classes site. Pam created his classes page and helped him maintain and modify it. The classes site can be accessed here: As Prof. Isenstadt had asked at the beginning of the project, his classes site is intended to serve as a “go-to place” for students with questions about the class as well as questions about starting the class research paper, using web resources, etc.

Two research guides were created for Prof. Isenstadt’s course and are available on the classes site. These guides cover research methodology, citation styles, and include an annotated bibliography for research tools (print / online) and image resources. They can also be accessed here:

IV. General Course Support

Throughout the semester, members of the support team worked with Prof. Isenstadt to ensure that images were loaded and accessible in Insight, that his classes site remained stable and current, and that concerns over Contribute, PowerPoint, Portfolio, etc. were addressed. In mid-October, Hannah gave an introduction to Prof. Isenstadt’s course on using Insight and the resources developed for the class.

While the “production” work for Prof. Isenstadt’s class is completed, the Team continues to provide him with general service support when he requires it, particularly during the mid-term and final exam periods. The Team will likely meet with Prof. Isenstadt in December – following his last class – to review the fall course and the support offered by the ELI Support Team. At that time, initial plans will be made for the spring semester class.
