Dressing for the Summer in Spain
General Clothing Tips
- Athletic clothing is not worn around, except for going to the gym. It is uncommon to see Spaniards in athletic clothes or “bumming it”.
 - In the capital city of Madrid and in Barcelona, people prefer to look more formal and dressed up
 - If you’re traveling around the southern part of the country like Andalucia (Costa del Sol), you may see a more relaxed, laidback style.
 - A safe choice is wearing the all-staple jeans (jean shorts) paired with a good top and classic flats.

Our temperature could vary between 70-90 degrees in June. August is the hottest so our weather should be warm/hot but not terrible!
*Note – When choosing shirts to wear – do not choose shirts sporting brand-name “fashion” logos/labels (A & F, American Eagle, Hollister, Pink, etc.) – this will make you stand out as a tourist and attract pick pockets. It’s best to choose shirts that are anonymous solid, stripe, or floral print shirts/tank tops etc.
Shoes:
- Spain may be a sizzle in summer days, but that’s no reason for you to walk outside in flip flops – they’re only worn inside the house here. No flip flops when we are touring! You’ll trip!
 - Go for sandals, flats or trainers. You’ll need comfortable footwear to protect your feet from cobblestone streets.

Clothing:
- In general the Spanish have a very modern outlook on clothing. (Think H&M)
 - Teenage girls tend to wear shorts more than skirts. Denim is definitely 'in'.
 - Teenage boys are keen on designer wear and appearance is important to them.
 - Mature Spaniards dress conservatively and with style.
 - Scantily clad dress is not acceptable in small villages, away from the coast.
 - When visiting cities especially you may not want to look like a tourist. Dress conservatively.
 - Girls who wear mini-skirts and bikini tops will be frowned upon and will certainly attract unwanted attention. Long dresses or skirts are fine, as are trousers/shorts.
 - Guys – Khaki shorts and shirts are very common. It is not common to wear basketball shorts.

Cathedrals:
- One should be particularly careful of dress code if entering churches.
 - When visiting cathedrals, bring along a shawl, cardigan or scarf to respect local religion.
 - Swim-wear and short skirts are frowned upon.
