The 1500C Series is designed to quickly and easily locate opens, shorts, crimps, and other defects in metallic cables. The 1502C can measure up to 2,000feet (625meters).

Using a process similar to radar, the 1500C Series transmits electrical pulses down the cable under test. Impedance changes in the cable reflect some of the pulse energy back to the MTDR. The reflections are displayed on a backlit, HyperTwist, high-contrast nematic LCD display. The characteristics of the displayed trace allow the user to determine the nature of the cable fault.

When testing 50Ohm cable with aVp of 0.66, the 1502C allows the determination of 0.5Ohm cable faults. Multiple faults can be measured as close as 0.8inch. The 1502C measures 50Ohm impedance only.

Profile Probe type PR1

  • ± 3% accuracy, with ±1% repeatability
  • Usable in most soil types
  • Easy to install
  • Choice of lengths: ½ metre probe or 1 metre probe
  • Simple, easily logged, 0 - 2V output from each sensor ring

The Profile Probe type PR1 is a precision soil moisture probe able to obtain moisture readings at different depths within a vertical soil profile. Each Profile Probe has multiple sensors - four sensors in the 50cm probe and six sensors in the 100cm probe.

Profile Probes are used in access tubes, which permit rapid insertion and removal. The access tubes are only 28mm in diameter, making installation easy and minimizing soil disturbance. Guidance on the number of access tubes required for various applications is available in an Information Sheet; please click here to download a copy (87k).

The Profile Probeis easy to calibrate and can be used in most soils. (For guidance on use in highly saline soils please refer to our Application Note PR1 Performance in High Salinity Soils78k PDF ).

Profile Probes are dual purpose: when used with the HH2 Moisture Meter they form a portable system. Alternatively, when used with a data logger, they become part of a fixed installation. This flexibility, combined with low cost and accuracy make Profile Probes the right choice for both researchers and growers.

Using Profile Probes with the HH2 Moisture Meter

The Moisture Meter type HH2 reads and stores the soil moisture content at either 4 or 6 depths simultaneously, and can calculate the water deficit at each depth.

This combination of Profile Probe and Moisture Meter creates a portable, low cost system for quickly collecting soil moisture profile data. Readings can be taken wherever access tubes have been installed.

Using Profile Probes with Data Loggers

For fixed installations of Profile Probes where unattended recording is required, the DL2e Data Logger may be used.

A single DL2e Logger can handle many PR1 Probes and is also able to simultaneously log other environmental sensors such as soil temperature probes, surface wetness sensors and most types of meteorological sensor.

Complete systems, including augers

Delta-T can provide complete soil moisture systems, ready for field use. Systems can include data loggers, weather stations, tensiometers and many other sensor types.

The photo shows a 50cm and a 100cm Profile Probe, together with a selection of hardware accessories for use with Profile Probes; these include Access Tubes, Augers, and a Carrying Bag. Shown towards the right is an Extraction Kit with Ladder Jack.

Comparison between Profile Probes and ThetaProbes

The Profile Probe has evolved from the highly successful ThetaProbe single-point soil moisture sensor. The profile probe uses exactly the same technique, but with multiple sensors embedded in a rod. For a summary of the features and advantages of each product, please click here (23k).

To help customers put together flexible, multi-purpose systems, we have devised plug and cable options that allow Delta-T Data Loggers and Moisture Meters to be used with many combinations of ThetaProbes, Profile Probes and Equitensiometers. This is explained in a PDF Information Sheet; please click here to download a copy (220k).

Moisture Meter type HH2

  • Instant readout and storage of soil moisture data
  • Designed for portable use with Profile Probes, ThetaProbes and W.E.T Sensors
  • Calculates water deficit

The Moisture Meter type HH2 is a versatile readout unit for use with the Profile Probe type PR1, all models of ThetaProbe, and with the W.E.T Sensor type WET-1. It offers impressive functionality in a compact, hand-held unit.

The HH2 has been upgraded recently, please click here for details.

Using the HH2 with Profile Probes

When used with Profile Probes, the HH2 reads and stores the soil moisture content at either 4 or 6 depths simultaneously, and can calculate the water deficit at each depth.

This combination of Profile Probe and Moisture Meter creates a portable, low cost system for quickly collecting soil moisture profile data. Readings can be taken wherever access tubes have been installed.

Using the HH2 with ThetaProbes

When used with ThetaProbes, the HH2 displays and stores single point soil moisture measurements.

(The HH2 directly replaces the HH1 ThetaMeter. Users of the old version will appreciate the HH2 Moisture Meter's improved performance, ergonomics and ruggedness).

Simple, versatile operation

Readings are displayed on the LCD and can be stored to memory for later download to a PC. Up to 1100 time-stamped readings can be stored. The unit can be operated with one hand, for convenience in the field. After connection to a sensor it takes the HH2 just one second to take a reading. Each time-stamped reading includes a unique sample number, a plot identification number (A to Z), and a sensor location number (1 to 255). The LCD indicates battery status and gives automatic low-battery warnings.

User defined soil types

Standard, generalised calibrations are included for mineral and organic soils. The HH2 software also permits up to 5 extra user-defined soil calibrations to be characterised and stored for later use. The active soil type can be switched at any time during the collection of data, and can be specified separately for each sensor position on a single profile probe. The unconverted millivolt readings can be stored alongside the soil moisture readings.

Water Deficit Reading

This reading indicates the amount of water needed (in mm) to restore the plot to field capacity, across a user-defined rooting depth. The HH2 automatically calculates the water deficit, based on data from the individual sensors of a PR1 within that depth. Field capacity (or “refill point”) is user-defined. The HH2 User Manual contains tables of standard soil classifications and their equivalent field capacity values.

Outputs

The HH2 has the following selectable output options:

  1. 1.Soil moisture content (m3.m-3)
  2. 2.Soil moisture content (m3.m-3) + unconverted mV output
  3. 3.Volumetric water content (% Vol)
  4. 4.Volumetric water content (% Vol) + unconverted mV output
  5. 5.Water deficit (mm)
  6. 6.Water deficit (mm) + volumetric water content (% Vol)
  7. 7.Water deficit + soil moisture content (m3.m-3)
  8. 8.Water deficit (mm) + unconverted mV output
  9. 9.Unconverted millivolt output (mV) *

* in this mode the HH2 can be used with an Equitensiometer (data has to be post-processed to kPa)

Using the HH2 with W.E.T Sensors

The HH2 is able to display and store the 3 produced by the W.E.T Sensor: water content, electrical conductivity and soil temperature. [Further details to be added to the website soon].

The Moisture Meter type HH2 has been improved

and most users will benefit from upgrading to the

new specification

What has been upgraded?

The PROM (firmware), the PC Software and the User Manual have been updated.

The principal improvements are support for new sensor types, the provision of a

"Dataset Import Wizard" and the introduction of wider soil specific calibration

coefficients for Profile Probe users.

Do you need to upgrade your HH2 Moisture Meter?

Whatever your application, if your HH2 is not running PROM 2.00, we

recommend that you upgrade to PROM 2.00 now. In the case of WET Sensors,

there is no choice: older versions of the PROM do not support this sensor.

To check your HH2's PROM version, run HH2-Read on your PC and click on the

"version" button. [PROM 2.00 has been fitted in all HH2s manufactured since

April 2002].

Accurate: ± 3% accuracy, with ± 1% repeatability

Usable in all soils: even in clays and highly saline soils

Dual purpose: can be used both for portable measurements and

installed data logging systems

The new Profile Probe type PR1 makes it easy to get accurate

moisture readings in a vertical soil profile. A single probe can

measure soil moisture at 6 different depths, down to 1 metre

Introduction

Since 1995 Delta-T has manufactured a

single point soil moisture sensor, the

ThetaProbe. Now, customer demand has led

us to create the Profile Probe – which is

essentially a multiple array of ThetaProbes.

In designing the PR1 Profile Probe we have

aimed to retain the ThetaProbe's simplicity

and flexibility.

Portable or installed use

When used with the Delta-T Moisture Meter

type HH2, the Profile Probe becomes a

truly portable device for collecting soil

moisture profile information from multiple

sites. Up to six sensor rings can be

simultaneously read by the HH2 in less

than one second, and the readings

displayed and stored (see page 8).

When continuous monitoring is required,

the PR1 can be used with almost all field data

loggers. Each sensor ring outputs a 0 - 2.0V

DC differential voltage signal which is easily

converted into soil moisture readings.

The Profile Probe can also be used in

sophisticated environmental monitoring

systems along with standard environmental

and meteorological sensors.

Delta-T Loggers can handle multiple

arrays of Profile Probes. For example, a

DL2e Logger can read up to 10 x PR1/6

Profile Probes and, if required, provide

cable-free communications via a GSM

modem.

Quick and Easy Calibration

The Profile Probe provides a near linear

analogue output over the full range, 0 to

1.0 m3.m-3 for each sensor ring. For

convenience users can apply the standard

calibrations for mineral and organic soils as

supplied by Delta-T. These can be used

successfully for a wide range of soils with

typical errors of ±0.05 m3.m-3.

For greater accuracy, or for difficult soils,

a soil-specific calibration can be quickly

determined using a simple 2-point

measurement with a ThetaProbe.

The Profile Probe uses exactly the same

technique as the ThetaProbe in measuring

volumetric soil moisture, and the calibration

values are completely interchangeable. This

is a significant advantage over other

systems which have complicated and

lengthy methods of soil calibration.

Installation

The Profile Probe must be used in special

access tubes supplied by Delta-T. These high

quality components are manufactured to

strict tolerances to optimise the accuracy of

soil moisture measurements, and yet they

are tough enough to be hammered into

augered holes. A carefully augered, clean,

straight, vertical hole to the correct diameter

(typically 25mm) and depth is required.

Access tubes can be installed flush to the

soil surface (to avoid damage by machine

cultivation) or can be installed proud of the

surface. Air gaps between the access tube

and the soil must be minimized for accurate

readings. To insert a PR1 Probe into an

access tube, the tube cap is removed, and

the Probe is simply pushed in.

Delta-T can supply suitable augers as well

as insertion and extraction equipment.

Applications

PR1 Profile Probes have the versatility to be

used in a wide range of applications. In

agriculture, horticulture and turf

management, PR1's can provide vital data for

irrigation scheduling. At landfill, remediation

and civil engineering sites, Profile Probes can

be used in a monitoring role. In addition, there

are countless research applications in soil

science, plant science, hydrology and many

branches of environmental science.

How do Profile Probes and

ThetaProbes Work?

Dependable technology Profile Probes

and ThetaProbes are based on the same

tried and tested technology; they sense

moisture content by responding to the

dielectric properties of the soil. Since

water has a dielectric constant _81

compared to soil particles _4, and air

_1, the measurement is very sensitive to

changes in soil moisture and is relatively

unaffected by the density and

composition of the soil.

Both sensors generate a 100MHz

signal which is applied to an electronic

"transmission line". In the Profile Probe

this extends into the soil through a pair of

stainless steel rings, whereas in the

ThetaProbe it is via an array of 4 stainless

steel rods. The water content of the soil

determines how much of this signal is

reflected back to the probe.

The reflected part of the signal

combines with the applied signal to set up

a standing wave along the transmission

line, and the amplitude of this standing

wave acts as a simple, sensitive measure

of soil moisture.

Why 100MHz is best With frequencies

below _30MHz, soil salinity can create

problems, whereas at frequencies above

_250MHz it becomes difficult to

measure bound-water in clay soils.

100MHz is an excellent compromise,

enabling Profile Probes and ThetaProbes

to be used in clays and highly saline soils.
