Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to 2013-14 school year! I hope you had a restful and relaxing summer vacation. We begin our new academic year with excitement and look forward to providing a successful, challenging, and rewarding educational experience for all our students.

This handbook contains important information about our school. We suggest that you review it thoroughly and keep it as reference.

When you have finished reading this handbook, please sign and have your child sign the form at the back of the handbook, tear it out, and return it to your teacher.

Our goal is to provide the best possible educational experience for our students. Your assistance, support, and cooperation will bring us closer to this goal. We invite parents to get involved in their child’s education in whatever manner they can.

As a staff, we strive to meet and exceed the State and Federal requirements and we are committed to closing the achievement gap. We hold ourselves accountable to providing the best possible educational experience for our students. Arrival Times/Departures

Parents are strongly encouraged to make sure their children come to school on-time and leave or are picked up from school on-time. Students who are eating breakfast at school may NOT be on campus before 7:30 a.m., or 15 minutes before or after the class hours if they are not eating breakfast at school. The only exceptions are: (1) participation in the child care program; (2) working with a teacher; (3) participation in a supervised before- or after-school extended day program; (4) participation in an organized athletic program. This policy is for students’ safety as there is no supervision before 7:45 AM or after 2:15 PM. Students loitering on campus prior to or after the above times on a regular basis will be referred to the office.

Closed Campus

The Board of Trustees establishes a “closed campus” throughout the District in the interest of student safety and supervision. Once students arrive on the school grounds, they must remain on campus until the end of the school day unless they have proper written authorization from a parent/guardian and the permission of school authorities. Without this permission, if students leave the campus, they shall be classified as truant and subject to disciplinary action.

ATTENDANCE POLICIES

Attendance

Regular attendance is a key factor in school success. Students are expected to be in school each day unless it is absolutely necessary that they be absent.

When a student is absent, a parent/guardian should call the school at 433-5062. If this is not possible, the student must bring a note upon returning to school that includes the dates and reasons for the absence and must include parent/guardian signature.

Truancy

A student is considered truant if he/she:

·  has three (3) or more days of unexcused absences;

·  is absent for one or more class periods without parental permission, or

·  has three (3) tardies of 30 minutes or more

Teachers are not obligated to provide make-up work. Students who leave class or any designated area without permission will be considered truant. Sacramento City Unified School District’s truancy program includes partnerships with the offices of the District Attorney, Sacramento Police, Juvenile Probation, City of Sacramento, and several judges. The process when students have three (3) or more unexcused absences includes several steps: letters sent home, meetings with parents/guardians, and Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearings. Our goal is to make sure that every child has the fullest opportunity to receive a quality education so we will do everything possible prior to a truancy hearing to improve attendance. If, however, attendance concerns continue, the District is prepared to carry through with the SARB process to its fullest extent.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN EXCUSED ABSENCES ARE NO LONGER REIMBURSIBLE BY THE STATE. ALL ABSENCES HURT NOT ONLY THE ABSENT STUDENT, BUT ALSO THE FUNDING BASE WHICH PROVIDES STAFF AND RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS.

Early Dismissals

Students leaving school early must have a written note from their parent/guardian indicating the reason, the date, and the time they will be picked up from the campus. Parents/guardians must come to the office to sign students out on the Early Dismissal Log. No student will be released from school without a parent/guardian signature. For their own protection, students will NOT be released to walk home unless an authorized adult accompanies them. There are no exceptions to this policy. Please do not call the school to request an early dismissal unless it is an emergency.

IMPORTANT: Parents/guardians or others authorized by the parent/guardian to pick up a student need to be listed on the emergency card and must come into the office to pick up the student. They must have proper identification (i.e., Driver’s License or I.D. card) in order to take a student from campus.

Tardies

All students are expected to be seated and ready to begin work at the start of each class session. Students who are late must go to the office to get a tardy slip before going to class. Students with unexcused tardies will be assigned 15 minutes of detention, which is to be served during an afternoon detention session supervised by a classroom teacher. Parents will be required to sign a detention notice before student is allowed to serve detention.

DISCIPLINE POLICIES

Students’ Rights and Responsibilities

We believe our students have the right to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. They have the right to:

·  Learn in an environment conducive to learning that has firm and fair rules

·  Know the behavior expected of them and the consequences for an infraction of the rules;

·  Understand the due process consisting of:

-explicit knowledge of other charges brought against them, and

-the opportunity to be heard in their own defense.

Teachers’ Rights and Responsibilities

Teachers are responsible to provide the learning that will help ALL students become educated, productive citizens. Teachers have the right to teach ALL students in a classroom free of any distractions that would interfere with that right. No one will be allowed to take that right away from either teachers or other students.

Therefore, all students must understand that:

·  discipline and classroom control are essential for producing an effective

educational program;

·  teachers are expected to create and maintain a classroom environment

which is conducive to learning and minimizes behavior problems; and,

·  all teachers will have a written plan for classroom rules and

responsibilities and will share these with students.

Appropriate Behaviors

Below are a few examples of appropriate behaviors for our school.

Students will:

·  speak and act respectfully towards everyone on campus;

·  promptly and respectfully follow directions given by all adults;

·  take care of school property and respect the property of others;

·  complete all assignments on time and to the best of their ability;

·  walk (not run) in the school hallways and courtyard;

·  walk their bikes when on campus;

·  play safely and in appropriate areas;

·  seek assistance from a peer mediator or an adult when they are involved in a conflict;
