Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time YearB

*****************************************

For those of us who have friends or family suffering from serious illnesses, on reading this Sunday's gospel we are filled with a longing that Jesus would touch and cure them as He did with Simon's mother-in-law. We can only imagine the joy and delight in Simon's family when the mother-in-law was able to get up and served food. Jesus, as the Son of God, displayed many attributes during His time on earth. He was a miracle worker. He was full of compassion and kindness; He was gentle. He was a preacher and a teacher. He was non-judgemental and inclusive, a Son of Mary and Joseph and above all Son of God the Father, Saviour of mankind from sin. Many people were affected by Jesus’ miracles and followed Him but He didn't want to be known a just a miracle worker. Instead of basking in the admiration of the people He said to His Apostles, “Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.” When Jesus performed miracles He often referred to the faith of the person. Jesus’ message of love and trust in Him opens a new way of living for all of us. But we must have faith in Him. When we accept Jesus as our Saviour we can face the future no matter what it brings. As we see in today’s Gospel there is a time for healing, a time for suffering, a time for preaching and a time for quiet reflection and prayer. Let us ask the Lord to help us accept our lives as they are with all the joys and sufferings and live them to the full trusting in the infinite love of God. Let us take some of our time to spend with Him so He can bless the rest of our time that we spend with each other doing what we need to do for our good and that of His holy Church.

“A few minutes can be found each day to come together before the living God, to tell Him of our worries, to ask for the needs of our family, to pray for someone experiencing difficulty, to ask for help in showing love, to give thanks for life and for its blessings and ask Our Lady to protect us beneath her maternal mantle”
