PALMER H.S. MARCHING BAND HANDBOOK
Membership.
Membership in the Band is available on an audition basis to all students who wish to improve their musical skills and enjoy the personal/social benefits of music making. A music background is encouraged.
Performing Organizations.
The Marching Band is a performing organization in that we regularly perform music for the public. In doing so, we provide a valuable service to the school and community, as well as to the members themselves. Members of the Marching Band are expected and required to participate in all public performances.
Literature.
The Marching Band performs a wide variety of music literature, both old and new. It is hoped that the student, through the experience of rehearsing and performing music of lasting value, will come to appreciate and enjoy this music for its educational and aesthetic value. Popular music is also performed.
Auditions.
Auditions will be needed to determine proper part assignments within each section. These ‘try-outs’ will be played for the director, with the final scores being disclosed only to each individual performer. The audition procedure will be covered in the event that a try-out is needed. Drum Major Auditions will take place during the spring. Drum Major try-outs will be open to all current Band freshmen, sophomores and juniors. All candidates will be expected to perform the maneuvers, commands, and drills to the best of their ability in front of a panel of judges.
Attendance Procedures.
At the beginning of the marching band season, an attendance block will be set. Each member will report to this formation at the beginning of rehearsal for warm-ups, attendance, and cover drill. If you are tardy, report to the person taking attendance, or you will be counted absent.
Excused absences must first be cleared by filling out an absence slip. Serious illness or death in the family are the only excused absences, with the possible exception of school activity conflicts (i.e. UIL sport event). You will have one week from the missed rehearsal or performance to turn in your absence slip, otherwise, it will be counted as an unexcused absence. In most cases, there will be an alternate written assignment assigned to replace the missed performances.
Securing a Spot on the Field.
At the beginning of the Marching Band season, everyone will have a position on the marching field in the show, either in the actual drill, or shadowing a spot. With eligibility and attendance problems, there may be students who will be removed from the show. By the first performance the show will be set. Those who maintain their eligibility, exhibit good attendance, and pass off playing/marching tests will remain on the field.
Rehearsals.
The Marching Band rehearses regularly during the school day (1st period). Extra rehearsals, held outside the school day, are also scheduled. These rehearsals are held during ‘Summer Band Camp’; a comprehensive rehearsal covering all aspects of learning the marching routines for the marching season. Other rehearsals are held Monday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Student attendance is mandatory.
You are required to have music, equipment, and instruments ready at least 5-10 minutes prior to the scheduled rehearsal time. LATECOMERS WILL BE MARCHING LAPS AROUND THE FIELD AFTER PRACTICE.
Rehearsals may take place in a few different places, such as the Band Hall, Band Practice field or pavilion, or the Football stadium. Please listen for announcements and instructions!!!
Necessary Equipment
All members must make sure they have the following things for All Rehearsals:
● Tennis shoes or your Black Marching Shoes (no Barefoot, Sandals, Crocs, Flip-flops, Boots, etc.)
● Marching Charts, Show Music, Colored Placement Chips or Chalk, Pencil
● Instrument and Case (Sousaphone players will need to bring towels or a sheet to set the instrument on)
Rehearsal Etiquette
In order to have the most productive rehearsals possible, I have established guidelines for etiquette during rehearsals. The following are needed to keep order, and thus make efficient use of rehearsal time. At no time do I wish to convey a boot-camp atmosphere, but these guidelines are necessary to avoid wasted time and undue lack of concentration.
?Due to the large area in which we work, it is essential that the talking be limited to the Director, Drum Majors and Captains. Corrections and Instructions will come from the front of the field first, and then from the Captains. The Drum Major or Director will repeat the instructions for the continuation of rehearsal. Questions are expected and encouraged under proper circumstances, simply raise your hand, or ask the director.
?When you are given a break, please take it!! Do not play your instruments during scheduled breaks.
?BE ON TIME!!! (That means 5-10 minutes BEFORE the scheduled time!) Do not miss a rehearsal. If you are late, you are responsible for any changes made. We will NOT alter our rehearsal schedule so that you can learn what you missed.
Music Goals and Timelines
You are required to memorize the Queen Half-Time Music (also the School Song and Fight Song). Individual testing will be done on your SmartMusic software on your iPad. You will be tested with your earned grade being determined by the date that you pass the music off. In order to receive an “A”(100) for a particular song, you must successfully complete your play-off by the given date (and so on for a “B”(90), or any other grade). The grades you receive will be counted as 6-Weeks Test Grades.

GENERAL RULES
A. ALL band students are required to participate in Marching Band, as it is part of the band curriculum. Participation in this ensemble is NOT optional.
1. The Marching Band will perform at ALL home and away football games.
2. The Marching Band will be participating in certain parades and contests.
3. Cheerleaders, football players, and mascots are required to perform with the
band at half-time, and may wear their uniform(s).
B. Uniform sizing, Instrument rental, and paying band fees will take place during the first week of band camp, and summer band will begin Monday, August 3.
1. Marching Band Camp is MANDATORY for EVERYBODY. Working students and sports players need to make a serious effort to attend rehearsals. This is important considering the limited rehearsal time to learn everything before the first performance (without having to re-teach).
2. The uniform cleaning fee will be built into the band fees. We plan to not clean them until after the season. We will discuss the importance of being careful to keep them clean throughout the football season.
3. Band fee this year will be $50. This will cover new marching shoes, your band shirt, gloves, and help in the cleaning of the uniform at the end of the season.
4. Uniforms are to be worn at times specified by the director. We will wear the uniform in the stands until the direction is given for you to remove your jacket if you choose..
5. You are financially responsible for damage or loss of your school-owned instrument(s) & uniform. Never leave instruments on the ground. Put them in the case with the lid closed - even during outside rehearsals!
7. Girls will be expected to report in uniform. Hair is worn off the collar, and jewelry will be removed while in uniform. It is suggested for girls to practice doing this at all outdoor marching rehearsals as well. No fake nails allowed.
MISCELLANEOUS
1. Every Band member will be required to bring a 12-pack of a Coke/Pepsi/Dr. Pepper beverage, and a case of bottled water. These are used for the 3rd quarter breaks and at competitions.
2. Take PRIDE in your facilities. Please pick up your music and equipment and put it up properly. The Lockers in the band hall are provided for you to keep your shoes, socks, t-shirt, and other personal items. YOU MUST FURNISH YOUR OWN LOCK if you choose to..
3. ALL field half-time music must be memorized, as well as the School Song and Fight Song.
4. In case of a conflict between a band activity and another department, UIL events will always hold first priority. Otherwise, the teachers involved, and the administration will make all decisions.
5. Absolutely NO cell phones are to be brought to, or used, during, rehearsals. Keep them turned off!
6. Students driving to rehearsals will be safe and courteous in their driving habits.
7. Band students are reminded that physical fraternization is considered unsuitable while in uniform, on school campus, or on trips. While on the bus, males and females are to ride in separate seats. If this becomes a problem, assigned seats will be issued.
8. NO GUM / FOOD during rehearsals, in uniform or during a performance (including in the stands).
9. Prior to the first performance, a "Bus Clean-Up" sheet will be posted. Those students assigned will be responsible for making sure the bus is cleaned once we return to the band hall after each football game/contest. If a person on the list doesn't help clean, he/she will have bus duty for the entire year. Same goes for somebody making a big mess on the bus - clean up after yourself after it happens.
10. Dress appropriately for rehearsals. When marching, you may only wear Tennis (or marching) shoes.
STUDENT ADMINISTRATION
DRUM MAJOR.
The Drum Majors, in addition to performing, act as field assistants during rehearsals, help to correct individual errors and style problems, and review fundamentals with the band prior to each practice. The Drum Majors are also responsible for spirit and discipline in the stands, and conveying instructions during trips, to and from performances, special occasions, and will also assist in all aspects of field preparation.
SECTION LEADERS / CAPTAINS.
The Concept of the total sound of the Palmer High School Bulldog Band is developed through communication between section leaders, captains and the Band Director. These members are responsible for all marching and musical issues within their respective sections. Sectional rehearsals should be scheduled by the section leaders to develop accuracy of rhythms, a section sound with matched tone and pitch, proper interpretation of all music markings and articulations, consistence and uniformity of playing style, uniformity in marching style, enforcing the marking of the drills on each person’s music when appropriate, and to make sure their squad is accurately placed and marching properly. Section Leaders are directly responsible for the playing and marching precision of their squads. Each should communicate with the Band Director and Drum Major about any members having special problems with marching or playing.
Summer Band Camp / Evening Marching Rehearsal Special Instructions
Clothing: It is important that we make clothing a primary concern for the marching band - especially if the recent weather is any indication of how hot it's going to be in August. For all rehearsals students should wear:
a. Shorts
b. Light-colored shirts
c. Baseball caps - Sun Glasses
d. Tennis shoes (marching shoes). NO SANDALS, CROCS, FLIP-FLOPS FOR MARCHING!
Adjusting to the Heat: Along with physical conditioning, acclimatization to heat is important. Becoming adjusted to heat is essential to provide for gradual acclimatization to hot weather. It is necessary to be outside in the heat - Don't wait until the day before band camp before going outside during the summer.
Breakfast: You will need to eat something for breakfast before coming to rehearsal. It would be best to stay away from foods high in sugar or really greasy. Best would be cereal, fruits, breakfast bars, juice, etc. It is not advisable to practice in the 80-90 degree heat on an empty stomach.
Water: Drink plenty of water each night before the next days practice. Once you are thirsty, you are
already beginning the early stages of dehydration. You need to purchase a THERMOS to use daily during band camp. This THERMOS should be filled with water. You need to drink plenty!
Sun Protection: SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN!! Because of the time of day, it is recommended that all band members use a high quality sunscreen.
General Equipment: Students should report to practice on time. Allow yourself 10 to 15 minutes of time before rehearsal for personal matters. Students should have instruments (and case), music, accessories, and all marching equipment daily. Remember, when we go outside, bring your instrument case(s).
Evening Rehearsal Schedule: The only rehearsal(s) outside of the school day are Monday evenings from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Please be on time, as this is our most extensive rehearsal of the week where we can get the most work done.
First Football Game Performance: is August 28th! We will play and march the opener (and we basically have only 32 hours of rehearsal to learn Music, Marching Drill, and Stands Tunes for the game!).
