Word Clues Guidelines
Roots, prefixes, suffixes? What does it all mean?
All are elements that may be combined to form words. An element usually appearing first in a word is listed as a prefix (euphonious, eulogy); an element usually appearing last in a word is listed as a suffix (bibliomaniac, monomaniac); an element frequently appearing anywhere in the word is listed as a root (anthropology, philanthropy).
What does the number in parentheses represent on my lessons?
Next to all of the roots, prefixes, and suffixes there is a number in parentheses. This number is how many times that specific element will appear in the various derivatives listed on the sheet. For instance, in Lesson 1 the root “anthrop” has (3) next to it. This is because that root appears in three different derivatives of lesson one: anthropophobiac, philanthropy, and misanthrope.
Where can I find the definition of the derivatives?
Use a combination of resources. Based on the existing roots/prefixes/suffixes within the word, you should be able to discern meaning, but always double check using a dictionary!
