Athletic Director’s Summary:

As I reflect back on this year’s athletic program we have enjoyed several successes and areas where there have been opportunities for growth and learning.

Areas that are in need of improvement are as follows:

1.  Parent communication: this is being addressed in coaching meetings throughout the year. If we can improve in this single area then I will consider the athletic program at Poston Butte to be on stable ground.

2.  Inventory control: While we have greatly reduced loss of athletic equipment and uniforms we still suffer from, in my opinion, a tremendous amount of theft from within the organization. We have lost trailer hitches, rakes, a brass softball infield sprinkler, drag mats for baseball and softball, helmets, bats and balls taken from the shed between the baseball and softball fields as well as missing items such as a drill, screwdrivers, etc…

3.  Retention of our players: After the first semester we lost a tremendous number of students. Currently we are down 250 plus students from this time period last year. This is a concern as we play both Division I and II schools across the board.

We have had our share of success:

1.  A state championship in Cheer/Pom. 2 cheer leaders received scholarships.

2.  Another playoff year for boys’ basketball. 2 players received basketball scholarships

3.  Softball went 19-5 with 3 players receiving scholarships. Three players received all conference honors and are participating in this weekend’s all-star game.

4.  Girls’ basketball, one player receiving a scholarship.

5.  Boys’ baseball, one player received a scholarship and was named first team all section and will be participating in the state baseball all-star game.

6.  Track and Field, 2nd place finisher at State Track meet. Fist state placer in PB history.

7.  Football: six players receiving scholarships.

8.  Tennis boys/girls: quarterfinals in both divisions in the state tournament.

9.  Girls soccer: one player received a scholarship

10.  Swim: 12 qualifiers for state

11.  Boys Golf: first qualifier for state tournament.

12.  Wrestling: 3 qualifiers for state

13.  Implementation of the Unified Sports Program

We have a lot to look forward to here at Poston Butte athletically. I have a vision of making Poston Butte athletic department the premier athletic department in the East Valley.

Respectfully,

Gordon Ray, MEd
