Derived Academic Level/Class Level fields

To classify students in a manner that aids in reporting, several derived fields were created. The logic for these derived fields relies on several fields in the Student Information System (SIS) (ex: academic level on the term table and education level on the degree table) to determine specific levels for students. In the legacy system (prior to SIS), it was easy to determine if a student was an associate freshman vs. baccalaureate freshman. In SIS, these are coded exactly the same way (academic level of 10). In order to easily determine the Academic Level/Class Level of a student,a number of derived Academic Level/Class Level fields were created for the term table,as well as additional fields for IR reporting that are on the census table (IR_CEN_TRM_SNPSHT_GT).

On the term table there are three sets of fields that contain a sort field and a description field. The sort fields are needed in order to sort the names in a way that is most acceptable (Undergrad, Grad, Prof, Non-degree) and not alphabetical (Grad, Non-Degree, Prof, Undergrad). Note that all of these fields are independent of a student’s academic career. For example, a student with a career of LAW who is in a master’s degree program has an Academic Level of “Graduate.”
