MEETING OF JUNE 2, 2014

Another beautiful day in Carlsbad, President Lisa Rodman opened the meeting in her fire hat (discussed later). John Blair led the Pledge and our Words of Inspiration were provided by Mimi Gaffey. Stan Prowse perked up “God Bless America” with Harold Stidolph on the keyboard. (We DO sound better with Harold’s help.) Guests were introduced.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Scholarships: Ann Collins, Director, Vocational Service, announced that the club will present $21,500 in scholarships to CHS students on June 3 . . . all from the proceeds of the “Teens and Marines” Golf Tournament last July. Hi-Noon members on the Scholarship Team included: Ann Collins, Kim Blaylock, Patrice Haynes, Robyn Hill and Miguel deJesus. Ho-Rah!

Golf Tournament: Randy Ferren, this year’s “Teens and Marines” Golf Tournament Chairman, segued into the importance of a good club effort for this year’s tournament, set for Thursday, August 7, at The Crossings. Golf foursomes are $1,000 ($250 per player) . . . remember, it’s a FUNDRAISER FOR SCHOLARSHIPS!! It’s worth every penny, with 18 holes of golf, lunch, dinner and an auction . . . PLUS the absolute benefit of helping student education. What can YOU do to help? Ask Randy!

Demotion Dinner/Installation Party: Past President Yvonne Finocchiaro and her team are putting together a party for President Lisa on Friday, June 20, at the Sheraton, 6pm. Dress is casual/Hawaiian. Members have paid for this event through their club dues; guests are $50. Please get RSVPs to Yvonne. This is a PERFECT opportunity to invite guests who may be future Hi-Noon Rotarians. Invite them!

Club Maintenance: Robyn Hill indicated that the trailer has been moved to the Sheraton, she and Lisa cleaned it, and the club is now responsible for setting up the badge boxes and banners for meetings. Please put badges away ASAP after the meetings so Robyn may depart.

Presentation: Wendy Wiegand, as Community Services Director, made a $1,000 presentation on behalf of the club to Kym Szalkiewiczof the Carlsbad Council of PTAs to provide relief funding to the 13 families whose homes were destroyed by fire. Kym indicated the funds would buy gift cards to help the families (most lost everything and six families had NO insurance) purchase their most pressing needs. Members also personally supported this effort.

Fire Relief Fundraising: There are two functions at Pizza Port. One at the Village Pizza Port on Tuesday from 5:30 to 8pm; the other at the Bressi Ranch Pizza Port . . . also to raise funds for these families.

ROTO-ROOTER: JR PHILLIPS

As soon as JR Phillips approached the podium as Roto-Rooter,the membership rose to its feet and began the Pledge of Allegiance . . . having some fun with JR . . . but he returned fire:

  • He asked all veterans and spouses to stand to be recognized. No fines there.
  • He asked Dorrie Ritchie, Mimi Gaffey, Bruce Stewart and Dave Dana to stand and we sang our shortened version of the Birthday Song to them. No fine, but he’s warming up.
  • Kim Blaylock sponsored two events, and JR watched Kim chatting it up with Rick Sutcliffe and Barry Axelrod. Thereafter, Kim indicated he didn’t know who they were. “What?” JR hollered, “only the best pitchers in Cubs history!” (A little voice in the back of the room said . . . “Who are the Cubs?”) $100 fine to Kim.
  • Steve Ahlquist made a trip of historical fact-finding for ten days on the East Coast, on a bus, and was fined $50 . . . but where did the JR Phillips banner come from?
  • Dave Kulchin will be presented the 2014 Citizen of the Year on Tuesday, 4pm at the Carlsbad City Hall. Heartiest congratulations, Dave . . . you make us proud.
  • Neal Stehly’s daughter graduated from high school and will be going to USD; $50.
  • Al Wanamaker renovated Al’s Cafe “every 50 years” he said, and purchased new billboards from Cousin’s Signs . . . someone was fined $1,000 . . . Urbina said the signs say: JR’s Café.

ENCINA WASTEWATER AUTHORITY

Dave Kulchin introduced Kevin Hardy, who has been the General Manager of the EWA since April 2009. The EWA provides renewable energy and water resources to a 125- square-mile impact area, including Carlsbad, Vista, Buena, Vallecitos, Encinitas and Leucadia Wastewater Districts.

Kevin Hardy came prepared with slides and explanations of the work of the Encina facility, built in 1961 by Carlsbad and Vista, to handle wastewater and solids from the growing North County population. From that time this “technically complicated business” has grown to handle a population of 358,000 and to regulate 616 local businesses by way of a 10-member Board and 67 employees. The $25 million operating and capital budget is the same as it was in 1999 when Hardy arrived. Hardy focused the discussion on four elements of Encina:

  1. Protect the Ocean and Produce Renewable Resources. The facility handles 23million gallons (MG) of sewage a day, with 9 MG of water each day reclaimed for Carlsbad.
  2. Pure Green: Developing an income stream from the biosolids. This fertilizer, in granular form, has both public and private partners in the sales stream. The fertilizer can be used on anything and they produce 6,000 tons a year. They are the first public agency to have a product for sale (and the first Franchise Tax Board form to prove it).
  3. Pure Energy: “We produce power from the methane through a closed system at the rate of 560,000 cubic feet of natural gas per day.” It is 75 percent of the energy demand of the facility and Encina is “close to energy independence.” With the addition of being able to accept brown grease from restaurants in the future, they will be able to ship renewable gas.
  4. Pure Knowledge: Trying to develop creative ways to build “NonRate Revenue Streams.

The Encina facility was awarded the Top Clean Water Facility in the State of California in two of the last three years, and Hardy indicated that he is moving toward a “net zero operating expense.” Quite a goal, and interesting when Kulchin quoted Hardy as saying “no one deals with more crap than I do.”

Jackpot for June 9 is $230.
