GENERAL INFORMATION
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is a busy acute hospital providing the full range of services normally expected in a DistrictGeneralHospital. We are the only secondary care provider in the local health economy and in 2009/10 had a total income of just over £165 million. The Trust directly employs over 3200 staff making us one of the largest employers in Walsall.
In 2010 the hospital completed a £170 million redevelopment project which provides modern, first class healthcare facilities. Our new Family Health and Diagnostics Centre opened in May 2010, the Manor Learning and Conference Centre opened in July and the Outpatient and Day Case Centre opened in September 2010.
HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT 2011
The new WalsallManorHospital is a spectacular, light, airy, high-tech and ecologically-friendly building. The landmark development, in Pleck Road, heralds a new dawn for healthcare in the town
and brings all of the hospital’s services under one roof for the first time.
Around half of the beds in the new building are in single rooms, with the rest in single-sex bays – all en suite – and operating theatres, other treatment areas and equipment being state-of-the-art.
The scheme involved the sequential development of 5 main elements of new build facilities totalling approximately 36,000m 2 of new buildings, and the demolition of the poorest quality building stock, much of which pre dates 1900. Indeed, on completion of the scheme no building on the ManorHospital site will pre-date 1989. The separation of elective and emergency flows into the site also provides the opportunity to develop a landmark building for Walsall.
Developments include:
Family Health & Diagnostics Centre
Built adjacent and linked to the existing Maternity Block and provides:
New Women’s facility to include:
14 bed Gynaecology Ward
8 Day Spaces
Assessment Unit
Outpatient Clinics
3 Theatres (Shared with Children’s)
Children and Younger People’s facility includes:
21 inpatient beds
Paediatric Assessment Unit (6 beds)
Outpatient Clinics
Pathology Services

Hospital Based facilities to include:

Specialist Outpatients
16 overnight stay beds / 36 day beds/trolleys
4 Theatres
3 Endoscopy Room
Diagnostic Support Facilities (inc 2nd CT scanner)
Manor Learning and Conference Centre:
Library including IT access
Lecture Theatre for 120+
Seminar rooms to accommodate between 10 and 50
Support facilities for junior doctors and medical students
2 Clinical skills laboratories
Clinical IT skills laboratory
Overall, this development aims to facilitate improved functionality of existing services, allowing for a separation of the majority of elective activity from emergency work, increase the capacity for day cases and increase the number of one-stop outpatient clinics. The creation of a hospital street improves the management of patient moves and deliveries. It also means that clinical services are more appropriately linked, e.g. Medical Admissions Wards adjacent to Accident & Emergency.
ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
There are eleven Clinical Directors each responsible for one of the clinical areas (Integrated Medicine, Respiratory & Elderly Medicine, General Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Women’s Services, Paediatrics, Accident & Emergency, ENT, Anaesthesia, Pathology and Imaging. Services are managed through Specialty Management Groups (SMG is a triumvirate of Clinical Directors, Business Manager and Financial Advisor). There are 3 divisions which are Unplanned Care, Planned Care, and Family Health & Diagnostics.
Clinical Directors are responsible for leading Clinical Governance and undertaking appraisals for Medical Staff within their clinical area. They are professionally accountable to the Medical Director and managerially accountable to the Divisional Director. The Medical Director and Director of Operations are Executive Directors of the Trust Board.
The Medical Advisory Committee meets monthly and is chaired by the Medical Director, Clinical Directors, Postgraduate Tutor and Lead Clinician for Cancer Services
