Weed worries revealed!
When it comes to gardening –as much as we like to think we are green fingered bunch – a recent study has unearthed some weeding worries.
Researchers discovered that we regularly don wellies and gardening gloves to get stuck into a spot of weeding, only for over half of us (51%) to mistakenly rip out and bin garden flowers instead.
According to the study, carried out among 1665 British garden owners by Hozelock, 38 per cent of us are not at all sure about identifying which plants in our gardens are weeds.
With 24 per cent of us enjoy gardening at every possible opportunity, the love of gardening is alive and well in the UK. But the pressures of busy lives do take their toll, with nearly three in 10 saying it can be a struggle to find time to keep up with the weeding and everything else that needs doing in the garden.
Worry not; help is at hand, as Hozelock and celebrity TV gardener, David Domoney, join forces to help us take care of those invasive weeds.
David Domoney said: “Nature is beautiful; a dandelion with its bright golden flowers, perfect silver globe seed heads and emerald serrated leaves is a joy to see. However growing all over your paths, planted beds and lawn it's a different matter.”
Here are some top tips to stop weeds from taking over the garden:
- Weed the ground when the soil is moist, it is easier to pull out the roots, you can dampen the soil first if it’s a dry day.
- Make it a regular job, say 10 minutes each day, have a bucket and gloves ready by the back door.
- Make sure when planting new plants that they do not have weeds growing on the surface of their pot.
- Use weed block fabric to stop weeds growing, you can also mulch with bark chip
- Look at some of the latest gadgets to help you get the job done. The Green Power Thermal Weeder from Hozelock kills the weeds by destroying the plant cells, with no need for chemicals.
David continued: “Keeping control of invasive unwanted plants is an essential task of a gardener, if they spread it's a much bigger job. One year seeding means seven years weeding, so remove them before they get a chance to reproduce.”
