The Danger Of Weak Or Little Faith

Matthew 8:23 – 27

23Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him.

24And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.

25Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

26But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Introduction:

  • Some think this story is about Christ’s ability to provide protection “in the storms of life”
  • It is actually a story about FEAR & FAITH: vs 26 – “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith.”

4 Dangers That Arise Out Of Weak Or Little Faith:

1. Unsuspected Things Overcome You

Matthew 8:24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.

A. Christ needs people of great faith who will not waiver

in the trials of life.

B. He teaches us to be confident, even in the midst of our

storms.

  • The Disciples were just following Jesus: He got into a boat….
  • They were carrying out life as usual when the storm came…

C. The Storm was not expected!

2. Natural Problems Become Magnified

(same verse) Matthew 8:24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.

A. Instead of coping with the storm and waves, the

disciples panicked.

B. We magnify a cough into phenomena: a cut to needing

stitches;

C. We become so concerned with the “waves” we don’t

recognize that the boat is still floating!

3. The Worst Is Expected!

Matthew 8:25 25Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

A. We have a way of always expecting the worst case

scenario.

B. God has forsaken us – He’s sleeping and we’re about to go

under!

C. If we are faithfully serving Him - If we go down – He

goes down also!

D. Expecting the worst scenario is evidence of weak or little

faith!

4. The Source Of Help Is Overlooked!

Matthew 8:26 & 27 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

A. The disciples overlooked the source of their deliverance

B. He was right there in the storm and boat with them!

Conclusion:

A. Jesus is with you all the time.

B. We forfeit the peace of God for the fear of the storm.

C. Remember, He is in the storm and boat with us also!
