HISTORY OF THE MONTERREY PROGRAM
The Latin American Business Certificate Program offered its first Study Abroad Program during Summer 2000. Texas State students had the opportunity to participate in a language immersion program concentrating on business Spanish at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in Monterrey, Mexico.
Intermediate Business Spanish (Español para Negocios) and Advanced Business Spanish (Haciendo Negocios en Mexico) courses were offered, allowing students to complete the 6 credit hours of Business Spanish (SPAN 3311 and 3312) required for the Latin American Business Certificate. Small classes of 15 students ensured individual instruction and maximum learning effectiveness.
During their stay in Monterrey, Texas State students lived in the dormitories on the ITESM campus where they had the opportunity to meet and interact with ITESM students from around the world. The students had the full use of the ITESM campus facilities, including library, computer labs, swimming pool, recreation center, and campus-wide internet access.
The Texas State students had ample opportunities to practice their business Spanish and learn more about the business environment in Mexico during 8 visits to Monterrey-area businesses and 4 on-campus lectures by Monterrey’s business and academic leaders. A number of cultural excursions complemented the business and language education experiences, with trips to Las Grutas (Caves) de Garcia and Horsetail Falls near Monterrey, and the Desert Museum in Saltillo, Mexico. Student scholarships were funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Business and International Education program and by Texas State University-San Marcos.
