Induction and Core Rules for St John’s

Welcome to St John’s.
At your Induction with St John’s you will be welcomed by staff, and asked to sign
some hostel paperwork. Staff will then go through hostel rules with you. Please ask about
anything you are unsure of - staff will be happy to explain it to you.
After completing your Induction paperwork, your picture will be taken, for the
hostels records and identification.
The length of time you will have to stay at St John’s will be dependant upon your
Licence Conditions and your Probation Officer.
St John’s operate a standard 11.00 pm ( 23:00) until 06:00.am curfew. This means
you have to be back at the hostel before hostel curfew of 11.00pm. However your licence might
have extra conditions such as a 07.00 pm to 07.00 am curfew,
If you are going to be late back to the hostel for your curfew, you MUST contact the
hostel, to tell them ASAP on 0113 2755702. It is your responsibility to make contact with the
hostel And No One Else’s
You are expected to sign in and out of the hostel, and hand in the keys.
This is a Health and Safety Issue, and needs to be taken seriously.
Most resident’s will have their own room in the hostel. You will be expected
to pay weekly rent of £29.35 (if unemployed) and £45 if you are in Full TimeEmployment,
although this can be negotiated on an individual basis.
Each of the rooms in the hostel have their own TV, this is in addition to TV’s in
the two main hostel area’s, as well as a full size Pool/ Snooker table.
You are encouraged to register with Hyde Park Surgery, which is a short
distance from the hostel. Registration is encouraged but is not compulsory.
You should hand in all medication to hostel staff, to be recorded in the
medication records book. Certain types of medication can be kept in your possession, but you
must always check with hostel staff first.
Help to register an online benefits claim or employment search is also provided
by the hostel.
The hostel encourages you to get involved in some purposeful activities
each week. Bike Club is one activity, as well as Financial Awareness & Living Skills.
You are expected to be up and out of your room by 08.30 each day.
Hostel duty staff will be coming around, to make sure that you are up.
You are able to make tea and coffee, from 06.00 until 23.30 (11:30) each day.
At certain times of the day, the dining area will be closed for cleaning.
You will be asked each day if you require a cooked meal, at tea time, this
helps to stop food being wasted. You should tell staff about any dietary needs, allergies
or foods that you do not want to eat for example for religious reasons.
If you have specific dietary needs, ask a staff member for something else when
you book for the meals. You will be given something else that you can eat.
A new menu will be posted each week on hostel notice boards, to let residents know what meals are to be served each day.

Supper / 2100 – 2130 / A light snack, toast and biscuits.
The hostel is a No Smoking Zone. The only place you are allowed to smoke is
in your own room, with the door closed or outside the hostel in designated smoking areas.
In the event of a fire all residents must make there way to the Assembly point, (Statue across road in park) as quickly as possible.
St John’s hostel staff are always available to talk through any personal problems
that you might have, this can always be done on a confidential basis.
No alcohol at all to be brought into the hostel, a breach of this rule could see a
your bed being withdrawn by the hostel manager.
Aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated at this hostel. All allegations of bullying or
fighting will be fully investigated, and if proven will be dealt with firmly
All complaints can be addressed to a member of staff, if the issue is not sorted out,
you can take your complaint further. i.e. Hostel Deputy Manger, Manager or Supervising Officer.
or finally the Prison Ombudsman.
The hostel has very good bus links in and out of Leeds, and regular buses to and
from Leeds Train Station.
Before you leave we will check you are ready. We will also help you to find some where safe to live and we won’t let you leave until you have some where else to go.
We now have a Housing Outreach Programme and a dedicated housing service called Compass St Johns to help with finding you suitable accommodation.
