Location:Dissection and Cadaver Surgery facilities, Sutton Bonington Campus, Leicestershire
Reporting to:Senior Teaching Technician
Purpose of the New Role:
To work as part of a team providing technical support to teaching activities associated with the dissection, cadaver surgery and museum facilities at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science. Ensuring that undergraduate practical classes and CPD are fully provided for through operational support and the provision of teaching materials.
Main Responsibilities / % time per year1. / Provide input to support the anatomy and cadaver surgery teaching requirements. Liaise with academic and senior technical staff to ensure equipment and materials are provided to time and quality standards. Plan work and disseminate information to junior/new technical staff to ensure the needs of all practical classes are met. / 40%
1. / Ensure the organisation of the teaching store room is maintained in a systematic manner and materials/equipment are readily available / 10%
1. / Responsible for the auditing, ordering and accurate recording of consumables for the dissection and surgery area of the school / 10%
1. / Preparation of cadaver animals for use in practical classes with particular responsibility for the sourcing and detailed preparation and preservation of complex osteological specimens and fresh materials of the correct species, body system and quality standard for use in undergraduate practical sessions / 15%
2. / Provide technical support to the delivery of veterinary CPD. Ensure all specimens, equipment and consumables are available as requested and that quality standards/time frames are consistently met and that health and safety procedures are followed by both internal and external parties / 7.5%
3. / Work with academics and senior technical staff to develop and construct working clinical task trainers for use in undergraduate training and examinations / 5%
4. / Operation of laundry facilities to ensure provision of clean protective clothing for use in cadaver practical classes / 5%
5. / Ensuring museum facilities and contents are kept tidy andin good order. / 2.5%
5. / Any other duties appropriate to the role/grade / 5%
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential / DesirableQualifications/ Education /
- Minimum of two A-levels in relevant subjects, or equivalent vocational qualification (NVQ, City and Guild), plus some experience in a relevant technical/scientific role
- Considerable work experience in a similar role
- Veterinary Nursing Qualification
Skills/Training /
- Basic IT skills
- Ability to communicate to staff and students at all levels
- Understanding of Health and Safety regulations and procedures
- Knowledge of animal anatomy and body systems
- Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment
- Driving licence unless disability precludes this
Experience /
- Experience in a relevant role
