BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE IN THE CITY

An apartment block being built on a former city bakery site will provide the foundation for a better life for more South Australians.

The seven-storey contemporary complex is being constructed where the iconic Balfours building stood in Mellor Street. It is among three new Common Ground Adelaide (CGA) sites under construction in the city.Other projects are now being built on sites in near-by Crowther St and Shannon Place.

CGA is a not-for-profit organisation providing high quality housing coupled with resources and support for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

CGA was established in 2006 by members of the Adelaide business community and State Government with support from SANTOS as a foundation sponsor. CGA now has three sites operating in South Australia: Franklin Street, Light Square and Port Augusta.

Common Ground Adelaide Chief Executive Maria Palumbo said the Mellor Street building would provide a home for a range of tenants who were at risk of homelessness including

young single-parent families.

“There is a real lack of safe, affordable accommodation for single-parent families in the city,” Ms Palumbo said.

“Some of the apartments will have two bedrooms enabling small families to live comfortably there.

“These families, who are already extremely vulnerable, are among those most highly impacted by changes to income benefits. By helping them into housing where they are close to services and support we are putting them in the best possible position to build a better future.”

Ms Palulmbo saidthe seven units being built in Crowther Street were specifically for vulnerable people who would find it extremely difficult to secure and sustain a tenancy in the private market.

“Some tenants from the Light Square site, who have become more independent, will move to Crowther Street,” Ms Palumbo said.

“This will, in turn, create vacancies for new tenants at other sites including Light Square where intensive support including doctors, dentists and social workers are based.”

Meantime, the five new units in a new development on Shannon Place will provide a stable place to live for people on low incomes needing affordable accommodation in the city.

The Crowther St and Shannon Place projects should be completed by July. The Mellor Street complex is expected toopened in early 2015.
