New Forest History made at the Horse of the Year Show 2013

This year HOYS marked a significant step for our breed, at last our own section, with ten national New Forest qualifying classes available to compete for the coveted HOYS ticket. These classes were well supported by the NF showing brigade who were delighted to have their own breed qualifiers at last, it is hoped that we may, in time, get more qualifiers down south .The New Forest final was the first class on the first day of the show 9th October at 7am in the Caldene Arena at the NEC Birmingham.

There was a good turnout of loyal supporters from the forest & we gathered together waiting to be first in when the doors opened! We were not disappointed as the ponies came marching in, all looked a credit to their owners & were well behaved throughout the class, living proof of the breed’s good temperament. Breeder Kate Baxter from Yorkshire dominated the class with three home bred Marley Dene ponies forward, all out of the same dam Wayland Prima Donna bred by Mary Bryant, quite an achievement for one little mare! However it was the stallion Mallards Wood Saint Peter who stole the show giving a foot perfect performance to win, all credit to his owner/rider Victoria Edwards-Sonnex who qualified at the Cheshire County Show .St Peter was bred by New Forest Agister Robert Maton ,out of the forest bred champion mare Mallards Wood Goddess sire the legendary Peveril Peter Piper .Second place went another stallion, Marley Dene Nashaal sire Wayland Golden Harry , beautifully ridden & produced by Caroline Saker who is based in the New Forest. Third place went to owner/rider Alex Hawkins’s athletic roan gelding Marley Dene Shiraz , fourth was the MJM team’s stallion Applewitch Magister making his third visit to the NEC, bred by Alan & Kay Bailey ,he is out of the forest bred mare Samsons Maiden and ridden by Charlie Jenkins, Magister & Shiraz are by Applewitch Pure Magic.

Bisterne Diva was the highest placed mare taking 5th place, she is by Burley Dunedin out of Little Miss Merry bred by Theresa Turnbull now owned & produced by Stephanie Wheway .6th place went to Mr & Mrs C Larges’s Willoway Free Spirit.
