A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Elmo Greer.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Elmo Greer.

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer was born on March 19, 1914, a native of Clay County, Kentucky, and a longtime resident of Laurel County, and he traversed these earthly bounds on January 16, 2000; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer was the loving son of the late Jerry Dink Greer and Dora Reid Greer; he was the devoted husband of Agnes Elam Greer; he was the loving father of two daughters, Phyllis Greer and Karen Greer; five sons, Rex Greer, Randell (Sam) Greer, Elmo Lee Greer, Jerry Greer, and Lanny Greer; and he was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer was a highly esteemed member of the Laurel County community where he began a small trucking company in the 1930's, later expanding to include various family members. This partnership became the parent company of Greer Brothers & Young, Inc., one of America's leading construction companies; and he later founded G & G Construction which became the present Elmo Greer & Sons, Inc.; other companies formed by Mr. Greer were Greer Brothers Trucking Company, Greer Brothers & Bullock, G & G Coal & Energy Company, Jasper Iron and Metal, The Jimco Company, Grehan, Inc., Greer & Smith Farms, and Cumberland Valley Insurance Management; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer served as former president of the Kentucky Highway Division of American General Contractors in 1965, and former president of the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors in 1966; and in 1997, he was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Construction Management Founders Society, University of Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer was a leader in the banking industry for more than 40 years, serving as a Director and then bank President and Chairman of Cumberland Valley National Bank in London, Kentucky, until his retirement in 1991; and in the early 1970's, Mr. Greer returned to his native Clay County to lead the purchase of the First National Bank of Manchester in which he served as bank Director, President, and Chairman of the Board, and through his leadership, these banks grew to be among Kentucky's leading regional banking centers; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer served on the United States Citizens Council of the United Nations from 1970 to 1990; he was an avid supporter of the University of Kentucky and the University of Kentucky Athletic Department; he was active in farming and cattle operations; he was a 32nd Degree Mason, McKee Lodge, London, Kentucky, and he was a Shriner of the Oleika Temple; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Greer was a devout member of the New Salem Baptist Church since 1945, where he served as deacon, and he was a Sunday School teacher for more than 30 years; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Elmo Greer has left a void that will be difficult to fill, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. At the request of Senator Albert Robinson and Senator Robert Stivers, the Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Elmo Greer, and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Elmo Greer.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Agnes Elam Greer, 3489 North U.S. 25, East Bernstadt, Kentucky 40729.
