The Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger (born in Berlin) is now is regarded as one of the foremost pianists of his generation. Since studying at the Juilliard School with Herbert Stessin (where he was twice awarded the Gina Bachauer Memorial Scholarship), he has continued to live in New York and has appeared with a number of the leading US orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony Washington, San Francisco Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Houston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony. Recitals across the US and Canada have included appearances in the Great Performers Series at the Lincoln Center in New York, in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Toronto and at the Ravinia Festival.
Highlights of Haefliger’s 2002/2003 season include his Salzburg Festival debut with Camerata Salzburg, and performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra/Sawallisch, Budapest Festival Orchestra/Ivan Fischer, Bavarian Radio Symphony and Gothenburg Symphony. In the US he will perform the complete Beethoven concerto cycle with the Milwaukee Symphony as well as at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St Lukes and with the Vancouver Symphony and Winnipeg Symphony. Haefliger will also be performing extensively in recital including at the Wigmore Hall in London, Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus and Lisbon as well as in the USA in Cleveland, Washington DC and Toronto.
Following his London debut in 1993 at Wigmore Hall, Haefliger has appeared regularly there, as well as at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 1998/99 Wigmore Hall presented a special 3-concert series of chamber music concerts featuring Haefliger in collaboration with the Takacs Quartet, Matthias Goerne, Marina Piccinini and the Safri Duo. The same series also took place in Freiburg. He has performed twice at the BBC Proms, and with the Philharmonia, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Northern Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
Elsewhere in Europe, Haefliger has played with the DSO-Berlin at the Philharmonie, Munich Philharmonic, NDR Hamburg, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (concerts in Munich and Vienna), SWR Sinfonie-Orchester, Frankfurt Radio Orchestra at the Alte Oper, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Philharmonische Staatsorchester Hamburg, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg, Danish Radio Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Netherlands Philharmonic. He also appeared to great critical acclaim with the Cleveland Orchestra/Dohnanyi at the Lucerne Easter Festival, and with the Philharmonia/Thielemann on tour in Spain and Portugal.

His numerous European recital appearances have included the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Chatelet and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Klavierfest am Ruhr, Lucerne International Festival, and annual visits to Milan.
In June 1998, Haefliger made his debut in Japan with both the NHK Symphony Orchestra and Kioi Hall Orchestra, which included performances in both Tokyo and Osaka. He returned there in June 2000, working again with the NHK Symphony/Dutoit.
An active chamber musician, he appears regularly at festivals such as Lucerne, Davos, Lausanne, Tivoli, Kuhmo, Vancouver and Newport, Rhode Island. He frequently performs with baritone Matthias Goerne, including concerts at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Montreux Festival, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Valencia and Brussels. In 1995, he performed Schubert's Winterreise with his father Ernst Haefliger in three highly acclaimed concerts in New York, London and Milan.
After the enormous success of his first recording of Mozart Sonatas for Sony Classical, Haefliger made three further recordings for Sony of Schumann’s Davidsbündlertanze and Fantasiestücke, Schubert Impromptus, and a disc of music by the distinguished contemporary Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. More recently Haefliger has made several recordings for Decca with the Takacs Quartet and Matthias Goerne. The latest Goerne/Haefliger release of Schubert’s Goethe Lieder received the highest critical acclaim and won a Preis Der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
