A Roman Scrapbook/Album

Scenario 1:

You are an ancient Roman puerfrom a wealthy Roman family belonging to either the senatorial or equites class. You are 15, almost 16 years old. You have just learned that on the day you assume the toga virilis (your birthday), your pater plans to sign you up for Caesar’s army. You sit down to review your life and contemplate your future. You decide to create a “scrapbook” or “album” containing items important to your life.

Scenario 2:

You are an ancient Roman puella from a wealthy Roman family belonging to either the senatorial or equites class. You are 15, almost 16 years old. You have just learned that on the day of your birthday, your pater plans to marry you off to another Roman family. You sit down to review your life and contemplate your future. You decide to create a “scrapbook” or “album” containing items important to your life.

Scrapbook or Album:

  1. Make a scrapbook or album. It is NOT necessary to spend a lot of money on this project. A 3 prong report folder or clear plastic holder will be sufficient.
  1. Plan ONE (1) page per each topic.
  • Family

--Include all your family members (see teacher for drawings).

--Give the proper Roman name (praenomen, nomen, & cognomen) for

each member.

--Give age of each member in Roman numerals.

--Identify the role of each family member (e.g., pater, mater, etc.)

  • House

--Tell where in Rome your house is located.

--Provide drawings /pictures of your house.

--Label rooms in your house. (See page 139 in the text to get you started.)

  • Occupation

--Identify the class of people your father belongs to.

--Identify your father’s occupation and source of income.

--Describe your father’s daily activities. Include some of the people he

meets on a daily basis.

  • Childhood—Education

--Describe a typical school day.

Where were you taught?

Who taught you?

What did you learn?

What was it like?

  • Childhood—Playtime

--Describe games that you played.

--Who were your friends and playmates?

--What family chores did you have to do?

  • Your future

--For the boys—

--Describe the day you receive the toga virilis.

--Describe entering the military.

What have you heard about your first military assignment?

What is your military training to be?

Where will you be sent?

What do you think you will be doing?

--For the girls—

--Describe your wedding day.

--Tell us about the family you will be joining:

What is your husband like? What do you know about him?

Where will you live?

What do you think you will be doing to set up your own

household? Or how will you fit into his family’s

household?
